Sparks

Hi everyone! We are joining Comedy Plus’ Awww…Mondays and McGuffy’s Reader’s Sparks blog hop. I haven’t had a chance to do much reading with decorating , shopping and working on Christmas cards so I am skipping the reading hop.

I have a double spark this week. I have been recommending forgotten people to remember this holiday season. This week, I am suggesting the staff at the vet clinic. Most of you probably don’t spend as much time at the vet as I do, I usually get there at least once a week- not a good thing, The receptionists are always so sweet and the vet techs too. I will be there this week with Sammy for his dental and Polar Bear for his thyroid blood work. When I go, I plan to bring a treat for them , probably peanut butter fudge that I will make. I know most receptionists get minimum wage or not much more so I like to acknowledge their hard work. Is there a place you frequent that you could bring a treat to?

My other spark was of all things, on my McDonald’s coffee cup. They have nice festive cups, mine said ” Give the gift of kindness and hope it gets regifted.”  I thought that was such a great idea. I never thought of wanting something to be regifted, but kindness should be.

Don’t forget to comment on Sunday’s post for a chance to win Prancie’s Grumpy giveaway.

The Twelve Cats of Christmas

Hi everyone! We are joining Athena’s Caturday Art Blog Hop and Ten Things of Thankful.

Our art today is our Christmas card with all 12 of the kitties. Please feel free to take the card. I plan to email it and also mail them to those that signed up for the exchange. If you need cards, I highly recommend groupon. I got mine made at Staples for only $8 for a set of 25 purchased through groupon. ( I am not being compensated, I just like to share bargains).

Here are my thankfuls-

  1. Thankful to live in an area where we get a lot of snow and cold weather- even though the snow is messing up my plans to go to Emily Dickinson’s birthday party at her museum.
  2. Emmy continues to sit on my lap, when Joanie isn’t hogging it.
  3. For my ornament/decoration collection that I have acquired over my lifetime ( I will be showing some next Saturday).
  4. Coffee with a friend.
  5. Shopping with my mom.
  6. A hubby that puts the outside lights on the house and in the yard.
  7. Being able to give my great-niece a cookie and then getting to leave- I must admit I thought it was funny to see her jumping up and down on the couch ( a sugar high) when I was leaving.
  8. Groupon ( see above).
  9. A package from a dear friend that arrived this week.
  10. Coffee- the best beverage 🙂

Be sure to come back tomorrow for Prancie’s Grumpy Giveaway!

4. A holiday gift that I always buy for someone is                           .

My Answers:
1. The best part of last week was Sammy’s heartworm antigen test being negative
( although, I pan to get another one in a few months and an x-ray just in case a heartworm survives to adulthood).
2. The worst part of last week was worrying about Sammy.
3. Decluttering is a Winter project that I will be working on. I know I always write about decluttering and I start, but then life gets in the way. My husband is not very cooperative in this area either.
4. A holiday gift that I always buy for someone is a Fontanini nativity piece for my husband’s sister. We have been adding to her collection for 25 years, I had no idea there were that many people in Bethlehem.

Thankful Thursday

Hi everyone!   I am joining Brian’s Thankful Thursday Blog Hop. I am thankful that I only had to wear this elf costume for 2 minutes.

Here is my Poem for Sammy’s Poetry Day featuring the letter Z.

ZOO
I feel like I live in a zoo
if you lived here, you’d feel that way too.
There is Joanie the monkey
Piggy Brody is chunky.
Emmy looks like a skunk
Sammy thinks he is a hunk
We even have a Polar Bear
Ugh! I think I need some fresh air.

On Sunday I am having a Grumpy Giveaway so be sure to check it out.

Here are the Friendly Fill-Ins for Friday. Mom came up with the first two and Annie of McGuffy’s Reader came up with the second two.

Even Indoor Cats Get Heartworms

Hi everyone! As you know last week I had a scare with Sammy testing positive for heartworm. Now that I have read up on heartworm in cats, I want to spread the word so everyone knows the risks. My vet has always recommended preventative and has posters in the exam rooms about heartworms in both cats and dogs. I chose to take my chances being that my cats are inside and hubby keeps the screens repaired. I do recall having two mosquitoes in the house this past summer though because heartworm crossed my mind when I saw them.

(isn’t Sammy handsome? )

I don’t have a medical background so I am going to give some links to read up on it. I will let you know that they affect cats and dogs in different ways. When a dog gets heartworm it is a death sentence ( unless treated), but with cats it does not always lead to death, but it can. A dog is a natural host for them, but a cat is not so if a cat does get exposed the chances of any worms surviving to the adult stage is less. A cat with them would have 1- 3 on average, but dogs have many more than that.

The mosquito is the nasty critter that spreads them. This is why I assumed my cats were safe because they don’t go outside, but mosquitoes do get inside despite our efforts to keep them out and all it takes is one bite.

There is a very costly and dangerous medicine to kill heartworms in dogs, but this is not an option in cats. If a cat does end up with adult heartworms, the worms can live for 2- 3 years in them. They can cause a respiratory illness resembling asthma. Many cats have no symptoms, but die suddenly.

Here are some excellent resources to learn more about it:

American Heartworm Society ( they have a map showing areas of greatest risk)

VCA page on heartworms in cats

Live Science (article about the importance of diagnosis)

Nova Cat Clinic (great explanation of how this is a lung disease, not heart)

I am going to be using preventative for now on after this scare. And poor Sammy is still not out of the woods because the first test showed he was positive for being exposed, the antigen test was negative, but there needs to be pregnant female worms to make it positive. I plan to have him tested again in a few months because it takes 6 months for them to reach maturity. I know this is all very confusing so please read the links to get a better explanation.

I highly recommend anyone with a cat use heartworm prevention. I am not sure if this is a problem in other countries, but in the USA it definitely is. If your cat already has an illness or is older you may choose not to, you need to discuss the pros and cons with your vet.My niece worked at a vet clinic for 10 years and she said they had a few cases per year of cats with heartworms and usually one death per year. That may not sound like a lot, but no one wants their cat to be the statistic, or any cat for that matter.

Please pray for two of our blogging buddies that are not feeling well. Feel free to visit them and wish them well.

Sparks and a Review from Joanie

Hi everyone! We are joining Comedy Plus’ Awww…. Mondays and McGuffy’s Reader’s Sparks blog hops.

Joanie finally had time to do some reading not that the furbies are hibernating.

Henry the Christmas Cat by Mary Calhoun is a children’s picture book about a Siamese cat named Henry. He follows his family to church where the kid is in a Christmas pageant and he ends up rescuing the sheep. It was cute story and there are many other books about his adventures.

And for my Spark, I am continuing with ideas to spread joy this holiday season. This may seem like an odd one, but you should give a tip or a gift to your garbage man. We give ours a Dunkin Donuts gift card and a bottle of the hubby’s homemade wine. I know this is a tough time of year for many , but it is the thought that counts. If you can’t afford to give  tip or gift, you could make cookies or candy. I am sure they appreciate being though of. I know my delivery people are enjoying our snacks, especially the ones that work late.
