Penny’s Tips Volume 13

Hi everyone! I have an unusual tip, more of a question actually. Mom made these book vases and she thinks they look to plain. I suggested she decorate them with pennies, but she doesn’t want to.

Any better suggestions of how to perk them up?

Millie is modeling Mom’s A-Z Challenge , C creation- coal , she makes these for naughty kitties at Christmas.

Don’t forget to comment on yesterday’s post to enter the giveaway for this catnip mat and socks ( Joanie is not included). Giveaway closes at 10 PM ( EST) April 3rd.

  1. I think painting them is a good idea too – and maybe stick some felt decorations or stickers on them.

  2. Book vases! Very cool idea like the pumpkins were (that we have one of now!)……..maybe some spray paint in Spring colors? That crocheted coal is so very cool…your Mom has the BESTEST ideas for things to make with her talented hands.

    Love, Teddy

    1. You are so sweet. They do need some color 🙂 XO and love to you both.

  3. We think the flowers just need to be a little brighter so those are some good suggestions. We like that coal creation. Your Mom sure is good at making such good stuff. You all have a great day.

  4. That is the cutest lump of coal I’ve ever seen! I agree with others that a little color on the book vases would make them look less plain. 🙂

  5. I have an idea. Get an old toothbrush. Dilute some acrylic paint. Dip in the toothbrush into a little bit of paint. Use the bristles to “spritz” the paint onto the vases. It’s like a splatter effect but in miniature.

  6. What lovely vases! When I think something I make is too plain, I like to splatter some paint on it. I tend to just fling paint on things using paint pens, but using some actual paint and a paintbrush (or a toothbrush, like Rene S suggested) would work, too. These will look lovely no matter what you do with them!

You and your coal look purrfect, Millie! We’re thinking that all of you kitties are just too good to get coal at Christmastime, though. Purrs!

    1. Good idea, I use spray [aint on the pumpkins when I did them. Some kitties here are naughty, but I don’t mind 🙂 XO

  7. I didn’t know kitties were naughty either. I guess perhaps some are, but I never thought so.

Have a purrfect day. My best to your mom. ♥

    1. Some kitties here are naughty, but the coal has catnip so that is OK 🙂

  8. Those vases are such a nice idea. I think they just need a pop of colour. Some ribbons or buttons or something like that!

  9. penny….purrhapz de next time de grate one iz ther, her could color em for yur mom !! may bee….N then mom could add just a few penniez heer N ther 🙂 de coal iz neat N will make a nice stockin stuffer 🙂 ♥♥

    1. That is a good idea, but she needs more practice with coloring 🙂 XO

  10. Maybe you could decoupage some bright flower petals onto the pages? I don’t know if the technique would work, but it sounds like a good way to add some color and keep with the floral theme.

  11. Book vases – what a cool idea! We agree with Melissa, maybe a ribbon or pretty bow to just add some color.

  12. You guys are so photogenic! We had to ask their Female Human what coal is, when she told us that when she grew up in Germany, St. Nikolaus Dau was always fun but a little scared as she and her siblings put their shoes outside the door and waited for St.Nikolaus and his helper. Good kids got nuts and fruit and treats in their shoes and bad kids got coal! Meowza I would be in a state of nervousness all day. I’m lovealblle but can’t say I’m always a good kitty. I think the knitted coal is waaaay better than there real stuff!

  13. Maybe you can color the paper! Or place colorful papers between each page. But I think these vases are pretty as they are, too 🙂

  14. We’re sorry we can’t give you any help on this, Penny. Our mom is so NOT creative. Hmmm… we can’t imagine that any of you would get coal on Christmas!

  15. We think a bright ribbon trim at the top of the vases would look nice but still show the book print to keep them unique looking without painting them out!

We got coal from you one Christmas long ago . . . but it had catnip so it was a big hit!! xx

the critters in the cottage xo

  16. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw Penny, we think your suggestion was a great one. And, we’re also sure awnty Ellen’s had purrlenty of suggestions by now. She could always paint ’em. Big hugs

    Luv ya’
