F is for Fleas

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today is the letter “F” for the a-z blogging challenge.

Fleas are the ultimate “F” word around here. Many of you may recall the flea fiasco we had last summer. It was a nightmare and took a couple of months to have them gone. It also cost over $500 for 3 months of flea treatments for 15 cats and flea bombs and sprays.

I couldn’t figure out how we had so many when we don’t let our kitties outside. I blamed my hubby because he is always outside, I also thought friends or family may have had them when they came in. I finally figured it out, we had taken Spooky in several months before. He had been treated with Frontline for many months before coming in, but I realize now that it wasn’t working. He had been spreading the fleas to all the other kitties for months before we finally realized it.

I don’t like using flea products, but I don’t want to ever have this problem again. Being that it never happened before and I am pretty sure I know how the fleas arrived, I am thinking of not treating the kitties this year. Please let me know if you have indoor only cats and if you use flea treatment during the summer. Thanks for your input.

Don’t forget to comment to enter the giveaway for a Temptations Snacky Mouse- you can enter every day. Phoebe will announce the winner on Thursday.

Happy Thursday! New Flavor of Friskies Party Mix.

Happy Thursday everyone! Not sure about you, but this week is flying by for me. I am happy to say my house is very clean as the flea issue has me vacuuming daily plus I have laundered everything ( curtains, blankets, etc.). In a way the fleas were a good thing because I wouldn’t have had the motivation to clean that much. I tried to convince my hubby that the fleas are in the furniture and we should get rid of it and buy new stuff, but he wouldn’t fall for it 🙁

Today is behavior day and I am curious to know how many others have this problem. My cats hate throw rugs. I can’t have one down for more than a day before someone ( usually Lucy) pees on it. They also find them a great place to vomit and poop. I try to keep one by the front door because there is a staircase there and in Feng Shui that means money will flow out of the house. Obviously, I haven’t had the rug there in a while. I just washed it again and I hope the kitties will allow it.

Same thing happens with the one in the bedroom and the kitchen. I am not sure if it is coincidence that they vomit on it or if they are that repulsed with my decorating choices. Please let me know if this happens to anyone else.

Lucy may be reviewing a book tomorrow- I bribed her with a new flavor of treats. 005Friskies Party Mix- Meow Royale ( Lobster, Steak and Shrimp). They are a hit around here.

Another Contest and Cool Cat Themed Items

Happy Saturday everyone! I love to give stuff away so at the end of this post, I will announce another contest. Today is product day and I have lots of kitty themed stuff for humans to tell you about.

First off, if you missed my post the other day, Target has a great kitty cardigan in sizes XS-XXL. Here’s mine: 015. I love it because it doesn’t scream crazy cat lady, it whispers it- LOL.

Next up is a beautiful comforter covered with cats from Heath and Home: http://www.plowhearth.com/king-kitten-caboodle-quilted-bedding-set.htm. They also have a matching kitty bed and shower curtain. Had I not already spent over $300 in flea supplies, I might have been able to get something 🙁 . Actually, I wouldn’t spend that much on a comforter, if I had available funds, I would donate more on ROAR days.

Now for the contest, I went to Macy’s with my Mom today and found this adorable bracelet that says MEOW: 002. All you have to do is comment today or tomorrow and you will be entered to win. I will choose a winner Monday morning ( if I have at least 10 comments, otherwise I will wait until I do).

Now I am off to yoga with the hubby-I think, although he wanted to skip and I could easily be persuaded to skip too. My mom got up early to come cat sit so I think she would be annoyed so I guess we will go. Have a great day everyone!

Lucy is Taking the Day Off

Friday again already. Today is book day and Lucy usually recommends a book, but she is taking the day off to rest her nerves. This flea issue has her really upset, the only time in her 15 years that she has ever had them. Prancie will be filling in for her today.

Prancie is David’s little Princess and he reads to her almost every day.012She recommends The Fat Cat Sat on The Mat . She also recommends Spooky Spider ( unfortunately, I looked online and couldn’t find it anywhere).

This is my choice: http://www.amazon.com/Crazy-Purls-Drunk-Divorced-Covered-ebook/dp/B001PSEPWK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407467360&sr=8-1&keywords=drunk+divorced+%26+covered+in+cat+hair by Laurie Perry. The book came out in 2007, but I just discovered it this year. She used to write a blog, but when I checked, there have been no new posts since last year 🙁  I am kind of the opposite of her-I don’t drink, I am married and I crochet instead of knit, but I loved the book. Anyone that loves cats is always Purrfect in my book. ANd like Laurie Perry, I am covered in cat hair-LOL.

Have a great day!

Kitty Cardigan and Angler Fish

Hi everyone! My mom and I got our pedicures yesterday, I got my Grumpy Cat put on one toe: 017Pardon my flea bitten feet. We also went to Target and I found this kitty cardigan:015I usually don’t buy clothes unless they are on sale, but I wasn’t going to take any chances on this – I can’t wait for the cooler weather so I can wear it.

Thursday is behavior day and my Sammy has an odd behavior. He will walk around “crying” like a little kitten meow until his sister, Joanie comes out to check on him , then he attacks her. She falls for it every time. My husband calls him an Angler Fish, apparently, they have a thing on their head that acts as a lure to bait smaller fish. Does anyone else have a cat do that? I always feel bad when he cries because I know they had a third sibling that was already adopted when I got them. I can’t help but wonder if he is crying about that. I don’t know why the shelter would never help me locate the other one, they could have just given my name and number to the other people.

Have a nice day everyone! I will be having another contest soon so please keep reading.

ROAR, Fleas and Grumpy Toes

Happy Wednesday everyone! I am thinking of changing our name to 15andscratching- the flea battles continue. I am disappointed in Frontline and from what I have been reading a lot of other people are too: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/254624/why-does-frontline-and-advantage-not-work-for-fleas-now. Someone also suggested a dehumidifier, but being that we have central air and that hasn’t helped, I sort of doubt a dehumidifier would.

As most of you know every week I do a ROAR to help a rescue group. This week is a little different, but it will go to a rescue group. Someone I know wanted to get her 2 cats fixed so I am going to give her a ride to the clinic that does it as well as chip in $40 toward the procedure. The clinic is Second Chance in North Brookfield, MA.

We are truly fortunate in Massachusetts that there are so many grants given to organizations for low cost spay/neuter. It is sad that there are still so many homeless cats that are not fixed yet despite all our programs. Our state like many others has license plates that you can pay a little more for so the money goes to different charities. I have been a proud owner of the Massachusetts one for several years: helps :http://www.massanimalcoalition.com/programs/license-plates/.

Hope everyone has a nice day. I am off to get a pedicure with my mom. Neither of us had ever gotten one until my niece’s wedding lasy year and now we are addicted. I wish my niece could go too, but she is working 🙁  My mom got me some Grumpy Cat nail art so I am going to get a Grumpy on my big toe ( photo tomorrow).

Tapeworm Tuesday and IKEA

Happy Tuesday everyone! Still battling the fleas, but their troops are way down-I think I will win this war–eventually. In better news, the new IKEA catalog arrived yesterday and I had my hubby hide it 🙂 If I start looking at it before I go to bed, I can’t sleep. I get so excited- I know I am pathetic.

Today is medical day and I am going to write about my next battle tapeworms. I know cats can get them from ingesting one flea, that happened to Stinky a few years ago. So I am going to assume all my cats have them, but there is no use deworming until the flea problem is completely gone. Here is an article I found about tapeworms: http://ladymeow.hubpages.com/hub/Fleas-Tapeworms .

I am going to keep this short- I must get to my IKEA catalog. Have a great day!

Sew a Catnip Mat for Your Cat

It’s Monday again already. I made a big mistake yesterday and left the vacuum on the enclosed porch last night without emptying and flea spraying it. Then I let Millie and Penny out there this morning and when MIllie came back in, I could spot 3 on his white fur-arghhh! Luckily, he didn’t have a capstar pill yet so he will be getting one today.

Today is fun and games day. About 6 months ago I learned how to use my sewing machine so I could make cat toys, beds, etc. I made a mat by cutting two rectangles about 12 inches by 20 inches and placing them so the printed side is inside then I added a piece of quilting batting in between and sewed around 3 sides ( about an inch in). After that I turned it inside out ( so the printed side showed) and added catnip. Then I stitched all around 3 and a half sides ( 1/4 or 1/2 inch in from the edge). I didn’t do all 4 because I left space for a velcro piece to refresh the catnip. It only took about 15 minutes: 009. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can always let your kitties play Twister instead: play5Good job Phoebe, left paw blue and butt on red 🙂

Have a nice day everyone!

Contest and Books that Stink Like Kitty Litter

Happy Friday everyone! I am a lot happier now that our fleas are under control. I will still have to use flea products for 3 months, but at least when I run a flea comb over the cats, I am not finding any.

Continuing with our not-to-do’s this week, Lucy and I will write about some books we don’t recommend. Lucy is in a foul mood this week due to the fleas and she thinks this book stinks:  http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/cat-training-is-easy-pamela-anne-moore/1119635224?ean=9781499714890 Lucy can’t believe anyone thinks they can ” train” a cat. Cats train people, not the other way around. 022

I have a couple books that annoyed me recently. One is Cat Sense by John Bradshaw. In his book, he explains why he isn’t a fan of trap-neuter-return. He thinks the most feral will never be caught to get fixed which will eventually make ferals more wild. I found his thinking on this to be really stupid.

Another book that I read recently was not a cat book, but the author mentioned cats. Buddhist Bootcamp by Timber Hawkeye is about practicing Buddhism, but for some reason the author lists all his past wrongs- he killed 2 cats!!!! I don’t care if he is reformed and sorry, I just don’t like him.

And now another contest:  I already have over 100 likes on our Facebook page, but would sure like more so if you haven’t already liked my page, please do : https://www.facebook.com/15andmeowing?ref=hl . I will pick a winner on Sunday morning- this is the prize: 017A notepad to write everything down that your petsitter needs and a catnip ice cream cone ( thanks Mom).

Have a great weekend! I am off to the groomer with my dirty little Snowball- photo tomorrow.

The F-word

Not-so-happy Tuesday here at 15andmeowing. I hate to say the f-word and hoped to never use it on the blog, but here I go. We have Fleas- I am so ashamed. I don’t know how it happened as our cats never go outside. And I rarely do.

Once in a while my hubby finds a flea and I blame him for going outside all the time. He does wear spray to keep the ticks, mosquitoes, etc. which should prevent fleas too.  I told him he should wear flea collars around his ankles when he goes outside. Sunday night, I was rubbing Joanie’s pretty white belly and I saw something black move. I ended up picking 3 off of her and several off of Lucy. I hate to put poisons on the cats, but I had no choice. I went to Dave’s ( the local pet store chain) and purchased Frontline. Including my canned food, I spent over $200 plus I felt like a bad parent whose kids get lice.

The only good part is that Dave’s donates a percentage of your total to the pet charity of your choice so I was able to help Second Chance today. I guess this post counts as medical and my advice is don’t let anyone ( including hubbies) into your home without checking them for fleas first. Have a great day and watch out for fleas.

I will be doing another contest soon so please read daily. Thank you all for stopping by, I hope you didn’t catch any of our fleas. This is Joanie’s pretty white belly pre-fleas:
