The F-word

Not-so-happy Tuesday here at 15andmeowing. I hate to say the f-word and hoped to never use it on the blog, but here I go. We have Fleas- I am so ashamed. I don’t know how it happened as our cats never go outside. And I rarely do.

Once in a while my hubby finds a flea and I blame him for going outside all the time. He does wear spray to keep the ticks, mosquitoes, etc. which should prevent fleas too.  I told him he should wear flea collars around his ankles when he goes outside. Sunday night, I was rubbing Joanie’s pretty white belly and I saw something black move. I ended up picking 3 off of her and several off of Lucy. I hate to put poisons on the cats, but I had no choice. I went to Dave’s ( the local pet store chain) and purchased Frontline. Including my canned food, I spent over $200 plus I felt like a bad parent whose kids get lice.

The only good part is that Dave’s donates a percentage of your total to the pet charity of your choice so I was able to help Second Chance today. I guess this post counts as medical and my advice is don’t let anyone ( including hubbies) into your home without checking them for fleas first. Have a great day and watch out for fleas.

I will be doing another contest soon so please read daily. Thank you all for stopping by, I hope you didn’t catch any of our fleas. This is Joanie’s pretty white belly pre-fleas:

  1. Joanie looks so much like Lily who loves to stretch out just like that. Mom thinks the flea collars around your husband’s ankles sound like an excellent idea. Fleas are sneaky. Without stripping off clothes and shoes before entering the house, it is too easy to bring them indoors. That’s nice of the pet store to donate part of their profits. 1. I will need to go to your blog and look at some hotos of Lily- I love calicos, I love all cats though 🙂

    1. We don’t have a dog anymore ( she passed away in 2011), so we will blame my hubby.

  2. We occasionally get them here because we take in shelter kitties.. and when we do we get the large dog size frontline plus and split that among The Crew (except Jack since it doesn’t work on him – he gets an advantage) since it is the same product. This works for Frontline Plus and the original advantage.. shelters have been doing it for years..

    1. Thank you for the tip, I will do that next month as I have been told that I need to treat 3 months in a row to be sure all fleas are gone. That will definitely be more cost effective.

  3. Yikes! The mom worries that we’ll get fleas even though we’re inside cats. But those pesky buggers like to make their way in on all sorts of stuff. We hope your flea problem goes away.

    1. Thank you .Fleas are awful, I was told it will take 3 months worth of Frontline to be sure they are gone-makes me itchy to think about it.

  4. Icky fleas! How dare they invade your home! Love the flea collar idea on your hubby’s ankles….and you could wear them as bracelets! A new fashion statement……….well, strangely (we’ve always thought anyway) I go out from time to time and munch on grass or have a mini-excursion through my yard and have NEVER had a flea on me! No sign of a flea…….Maybe I don’t taste good?

    Hugs, Sammy

  6. Sorry to hear your cats have fleas we had fleas in our home once we had to bomb the whole house and keep ourself and the pets out of the house for hours it was a pain inthe neck. Now I make sure they get flea treatment each month…….So now I have a happy pet and a happy Mom!!!

    1. I didn’t want to flea bomb because it would be hard to get all 15 cats out of the house in crates. I have spray and I washed everything. I did the treatments on each cat too- I think it is under control-knock on wood.

  7. Oh no!! Not fleas!!! We had a bad case of them last summer, and our kitties don’t go outside either. They are so easy to get! They were a huge pain and also a huge expense. Five cats with a flea infestation makes for a very stressful month. I used Capstar and diatomaceous earth. If you have them in your house too, there is a recipe for homemade all-natural flea killing spray that I used – it worked pretty well I think. I can’t remember it off the top of my head, but if you’re interested, shoot me an email and I’ll dig it up for you. Oh, and I set lots of flea traps — aluminum cooking sheets filled with about 1/2-1 inch of water with soap in it, and a heat lamp above it. Sounds silly, but I would set these at night and wake up to loads of fleas in them. Anyway, good luck!!

    1. Thank you, I am going to try the pan to see if I have any fleas left after treating everything. I bought a spray at the vet that is supposed to be safe. My niece works there and sold it to me and she knows I am a safety nut so I trust it is OK to spray. I agree it is a huge expense.

  8. Fleas ! Yuck ! Our mom gives us our flea treatment every month because we have an outdoor fence, and can meet other kitties (and their eventual fleas) nose-to-nose through the net. Good luck to get rid of it ! Purrs

  9. Yikes. We recently had to deal with the dreaded fleas and it involved baths! Spot on treatments, lots of vacuuming, washing, more vacuuming…..Even Stinky the TNR who hangs out at our porch got a bath too. MOL.

We hope your Mom will be able to get the flea situation under control.

    1. Thank you- I am trying to get them under control. I am getting Snowball groomed and a lion cut Friday because she seems to have a lot hidden in her long fur. She is not going to be happy.
