It’s Monday! What are YOU Reading?

Hi everyone! Today we are joining Book Date’s It’s Monday! What Are YOU Reading? This week I am reading a lot of interesting books. DSCF2424 Noel is posing with them because she loves to help me read. Kangaroo Dundee by Chris Barns is a memoir of how he came to rescue baby kangaroos. Many kangaroos get run over by cars and many still have babies in their pouches that are still alive which he rescues. I have always liked kangaroos and really enjoy Fozziemum’s photos of them so I just had to read this.

I am also reading a book that I found in the free pile at a book sale. It is in new condition so it makes me sad to think someone found it unworthy of the sale. An Interrupted Life: The Diaries, 1941-1943 and Letters From Westerbork by Etty Hillesum is an amazing book. Etty’s Diaries are similar to Anne Frank’s, but she is in her late 20’s when writing these. She is very bright and is trying to live a normal life despite the Holocaust. I am taking my time reading it because I know she perished in a concentration camp so there is nothing else of hers to read when I am done.

I will tell you more about The Mind-Gut Connection by Emeran Mayer later this week. I will say that there was some interesting information about toxoplasmosis.

We hope Noel’s photo is Awww…worthy for Comedy Plus’ Awwww…….Mondays Blog Hop.

And the question for P.S. Annie’s 19-Somethin’ Challenge is How old were you when you got your first job? What was it? Did you enjoy it?

I got my first job when I was 16. I worked at a daycare center in the after school program with school aged kids. It was a perfect job 3-5:30 weekdays, no weekends. And Summer and vacation weeks were full-time. I loved it and was a big sister to many of the children. I am still friends with several of them to this day.

Hope everyone in the USA has a great holiday! And everyone else have a great day too! Phoebe will announce the winner of her giveaway tomorrow.

  1. You can never tell what you’ll find at book sales. I always stop to look. I can never tell what determines prices. I look at book prices on abebooks.com and the price for the same book, in the same condition, can vary by dozens or even hundreds of dollars. But you never know what treasures you’ll find.

    1. I love to go to book sales, that is how I find so many older ones I would have never known existed.

  2. My Momma is STILL on the same book. She should be ashamed. She’s never heard of Etty Hillesum … but now she’s going to find the book you mentioned. Momma doesn’t let herself go to book sales anymore because she’ll come home with a TON of books and then be lucky if she reads one (and she loves reading … she just has so many interests, it’s hard to stay focused on one book long enough to finish it – before getting excited by another).

    1. That is why I read 5 books at once, to mix it up and get a wide variety. I try not to buy too many books, but I go to book sales and book stores and wtite names down then get them from the library.

  3. That sounds like a cool job to have. Kids are fun. My preference was always the little kids, like pre-school age, when we served in the children’s program at church years ago, but the 6th graders that we had were an interesting group. Sometimes they were really funny. What did you like best about your time with them?

Thanks for participating in our challenge. Have a blessed week!

    1. I always enjoyed playing board games and doing arts and crafts. I hope you have a nice week too.

      1. Thanks. It has been an okay week so far. I hope so for you, too.

Arts and crafts with children are lots of fun. I did nearly lose my good eye once while crafting with one of our little ones. That part wasn’t fun at all. She picked up some tool that I had on the table. She was sitting in my lap and when she threw her arm up for whatever reason (you know how little ones do), she got me in the eye with it. It scratched the cornea, which got infected, then I had a bad reaction to the eye drops/antibiotic. Thankfully, I still have my eye and it is still my good eye and not worse than my bad one. πŸ™‚

  4. We have found many great books in bargain sales like Friends of the Library. I got one classic book, How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling by Frank Bettger for only 10Β’ years ago at a Friends of the Library sale.

Glad you enjoyed your first job. Davey’s first job was as a college library assistant and his second is in the United States Marines. Talk about a juxtaposition. From having to be quiet to having to yell constantly.

I think the Kangaroo Dundee book sounds like it would be a great read. Poor baby kangaroos. Good thing he is there to take care of them.

    Have a great Labor Day.

  5. We love books too, but still can’t find the peace to read. It’s heartbreaking to hear about the kangaroes, they are such amazing creatures. We also love Fozziemum’s pictures and videos, she brings the roos straight into our homes πŸ˜€ Pawkisses for a happy read πŸ™‚ <3

  6. Sounds like a lot of great reading going on at your house……Mom never seems to find time to read any more – I’m just a bit “demanding” of her time lately and if she sits down in her recliner to TRY to read, she falls asleep (also my fault). Anyway, HAPPY READING!

    Love, Sammy

    1. I am sure your Mom would rather spend time with you Sammy. I fall asleep reading all the time. πŸ™‚ XO

  7. You always have such profound and interesting reads to share with us. And indeed thank you for sharing them with us! Noel is most definitely “awww” worthy!

I love that you are still friends with some of the children you watched over during your first job. When I was 11 years old a neighbor asked me to help her watch her kids during the summer vacation, and in that same summer another neighbor asked me to take care of her dogs while she was away. That started a baby-sitting and pet-sitting service that actually kept me pretty busy all year round, but most especially during school breaks and vacation times. I did that I until I graduated college at the age of 22, at which point I started my first true full-time job as a veterinary assistant.

    Happy Labor Day!

  8. Got to be careful at book sales — they are so enticing! It always makes me smile to see a cat with a book, unless it happens to be one sitting on top of the book i’m trying to read. Then i have to go get the cat another book and get mine back!

  9. I try really, really hard to avoid book sales. My TBR mountains will keep me reading for years even if I don’t buy another book. I’m glad you found a treasure though. Come see what I accomplished last week here. Happy reading!

    1. I have about 30 from book sales waiting to be read. I keep getting them from the library though so this is my emergency stash when nothing comes in at the library πŸ™‚

  10. Noel is definitely an Awww. So cute.

I love your first job too. That rocks. And to still have some of them as friends today is even better. You made a huge impression.

Have a purrfect Awww Monday. ☺

  11. My very first job (other than baby-sitting) was reading to children in a summer program….I haven’t strayed too far from that venue as I have volunteered at local libraries for years- cheers and have a lovely week!

  12. Those are some good books that you’re reading. Noel looks pretty posing with them.

I think that’s so awesome that you’re still friends with the kids you cared for back when you were in high school.

  13. Mommy finally finished Drums of Autumn, one of the Outlander books. She just finished In a Dark, Dark, Wood which she says was great! Now she’s reading Running With Scissors. As a psychologist she thinks it’s fascinating. As a regular person, she’s glad it makes her family look normal! MOL

  14. Dat is amazin’ awnty Ellen. Da pawrt ’bout your furst job. To still be furiends with some of those kids. Mommy can’t even ‘member half da kids she babysat, and purrobably wouldn’t be furiends with them ifin she did. And dat’s great ’bout da books. Not da one dat never got sold, but glad you found it and are enjoyin’ it.

    Luv ya’

    Dezi and Raena

    1. Thank you, it is an amazing book. I am lucky to still be friends with them, they are all very sweet people.XO

  15. Mom’s reading a mystery…..by Harlan Corben…she just discovered him but he is not a new author…Hugs madi your bfff

  16. As one mom to another I must tell you that there are some similarities between us. This is one of them. And there are books I cherish to this day that I have had and read in the scores of times throughout my life. I always look to see what is being given away…and sometimes there is a diamond in the box…a book unparalleled in interest and captivates me when I read it.

    1. We are definitely similar in many ways. I think I was meant to find Etty’s book, it really speaks to me and it is one I will keep. XO

  17. As you know, mom loves her books! You are like my Auntie D. who reads several books at a time. She has her book by the bed, a book at work , a book she listens to during her 45 minute commute and a book in the living room. Mom can only handle two books at a time – one fiction and one inspirational/nonfiction. Mom also loves books sales but tries to avoid them because the last time she moved she had a TON of boxes filled with books! We love you so much, Miss Ellen! We hope you had a happy Labor Day.

    1. I have 2 books in the bedroom and 3 in the spare room where I read with KaTwo.I love you all too! I hope you had a great day. XO

  18. Our mommy is still reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. She’s trying to find her creative mojo. We help but there’s only so much we can do! Her first job was at Dairy Queen. She got fired on the first day because even after trying all.day.long she couldn’t do the curly Q on top of the cone. Hence that lack of creativity thing. πŸ™‚

  19. TW got her first paying job a month after she turned 18. Before that she volunteered with her local peace group at a storefront they ran.

My furrend Michelle saves kangaroos. I hooked her up with Fossiemum.

  20. Imagine pitching out a book like that. I would have at least donated it to a libray or thrift store.
I found book selling for 10cents, years ago, its from the late 1800’s and its a manual for a new doctor…how to start up a practise. I am not a MD, but I just found that really interesting, and I still have it.

I had a paper route at age 12, and got a ‘job’ at 13 as a ‘candystriper’. (forerunner to my career,LOL) Then at 16 I started work at the local Kmart as a cashier. Eventually I went to a different cashier job, which I did for many years putting myself through college that way…wow, how things have changed since back them! (1975, I finished college)…

    1. Someone had donated it to a book sale, but they didn’t think it worthy of the sale so it was in a pile of free stuff outside. I am thrilled to have found it. You started working young.
