Advent Calendar for Cats

This week, I am joining Create with Joy’s Inspire me Monday and Comedy Plus’ Awww…. Mondays. I know several of you already scored the Advent Calendar for Cats at Trader Joe’s. I was lucky to get one the other day too. It is for Prancie

At $5.99/each, I can’t get one for all my cats. I figure she puts up with fluids twice a day and all her meds, she deserves it the most.

Don’t worry, the other eleven kitties will not be excluded. I still have the Advent Calendar I made for them back in 2014.

Here is a refresher on how to make one for your kitties. All you need is a mini muffin pan with 24 spaces, scrapbook paper and a bag of treats.

Just cut out 24 circles ( hubby cut them for me). Then number them 1-24, add treats to each space and cover them. Then hide it from the kitties or they will eat them all on day 1.

Penny will be here tomorrow with another money saving tip for the holidays.

Snowflakes in July

Hi everyone. Before we get started, I want to give my condolences to Summer, Boodie and their human on the loss of Binga. I always loved to see Binga in a post, usually interrupting a photo shoot. She was a tortie with tortitude and will be missed by all. She was also a founding member of The Crotchety Cougars. To visit her family, click here.

This week, I am joining Create with Joy’s Inspire me Monday and Comedy Plus’ Awww…. Mondays.

Joanie is posing with the book of patterns that I  have been using to make snowflakes. My goal is to make at least one of each before Christmas. 100 Snowflakes to Crochet by Caitlin Sainio is divided into 3 sections of difficulty. I am still on the easy ones. Below is a photo of the 24 I have completed plus all the duds. Some came out larger than they were supposed to( the duds) so I will use those as coasters. My mom got me this book for my birthday several years ago and I finally got brave enough to try the patterns.

How To Make a Catnip Mat

Happy Monday everyone! We are hopping with  Create with Joy’s Inspire Me Monday and To Grandma’s House DIY Linky party both are great places to display your creativity. If you are looking for some crafts and recipes be sure to check these out. We are also joining Comedy Plus’ Awww..Mondays

First off, I will tell you how to make a catnip mat if you have a sewing machine ( you could also sew it by hand if you want).

You will need 1/2 yard of fabric, 1/4 yard of quilt batting, catnip and velcro.

Fold the 1/2 yd of fabric inside out.

then place the batting on top

Place the fabric/batting under the needle with the folded part at the top. Stitch down one long end, turn and stitch the short end, turn again and sew the other long end-stop when you have about 2 inches left to sew.

This is where I stopped. Then flip the fabric back through the 2 inch spot you left open so you can see the correct side of the fabric.

Add catnip ( the more, the better). Now glue the velcro into the 2 inch space. Now you can refill as needed.

If you can’t sew, you can buy this magic Heat “N Bond stuff at any craft store ( even at Walmart).

You will open the 1/2 yd. fabric with the good side on the bottom. Roll out a piece of this Bonding stuff on the bottom of 1/4 yd.

Place the batting on top of the piece

Place under piece of bonding stuff on top of the batting and fold the fabric on top. Then you iron the fabric which melts the bonding tape into place. Do this on all 3 sides, leaving 2 inches to add catnip and velcro.

The only trouble with this way is the edges won’t be smooth, but I doubt your kitty will mind. Let me know if you have any questions.

Emmy is tired from promoting the giveaway last week.

Penny’s Tips Volume 4

Hi everyone! Welcome to my latest installment of Penny’s Tips. This is sort of a shared post with mom, it is her idea, but I improved on it.

She made an Advent calendar for us using a mini muffin pan that has 24 slots. Dad cut out the circles from scrapbook paper and she numbered them. She puts treats in for us for each day of December up until Christmas.

I think I will clean out the first slot while I am posing 🙂 She makes this for us because the only Advent calendars around here have a piece of chocolate for every day.

If you want to make one for a child, but don’t want to have candy in all the slots, you can add stickers or PENNIES! ( see slot 2). And that is my tip for today.

We are joining Create with Joy’s Inspire me Monday’s Blog Hop. There are already over 200 holiday ideas linked up so be sure to check it out.

Is It Too Early For Apples?

Hi everyone! Mom has been destroying books again! Do you remember last year she made pumpkins? If not, click here.

I didn’t want to get too close, that spray paint smells.

Here are some of the finished apples, if you look close, you will see a worm in one of them.

All you do is take the cover off an old paperback, cut an apple shape out of the book. Then you fold the book back and glue the spine. You can also add drops of glue at the top of each page ( mom didn’t, she is lazy). Some of the books ended up with built-in stems that she painted green ( I think she should have painted them brown). And others, she added a piece of a pussy willow branch. Then she added ribbons and a worm in one 🙂

She is going to donate these to the senior center to put on tables at their monthly birthday dinner then they can give them away, but she said I could take one for a giveaway.

I am having a giveaway of this book apple and this beautiful apple print catnip mat. Just leave a comment on today’s post before Wednesday 9PM (EST). I will announce the winner on Thursday. Feel free to tell me how beautiful I am, I don’t mind.

We are joining Create-with-Joy’s Inspire me Monday Blog Hop ( Yes, I know it is Tuesday). There are almost 200 links on this hop with lots of crafts and recipes.

PS: I hope Grammie visits me soon, I love her so very much.

We Have Spiders!!!!!

Hi everyone! Today we are skipping the book blog hop because Mom hasn’t had time to read much. I want to tell you about our spiders.

100_4989 Here are some of their webs, I helped Mom make them.

After Halloween, Mom bought a spider kit on clearance at Michael’s. Have you ever heard of The Legend of the Christmas Spider? If not, click here to read about it.

100_5025

Her kit came with the black pipe cleaners already cut and 2 sizes of pompoms. You just twist 4 pipe cleaners together, then glue a small pompom onto a big one then glue that onto the pipe cleaners. A spider needs a web though so Mom bought some silver pipe cleaners and had Dad cut them in half for her.

100_5026

She made a plus sign out of 2 pipe cleaners and an x with 2 more then wound some gold yarn around them. Then she twisted the yarn around each piece going in a circle two times. 100_5028 She copied the story onto Christmas paper and will give these out as party favors on Christmas Eve so everyone can have a spider in their Christmas tree.

100_4928 Can you tell what these crocheted objects that Phoebe is sniffing are?

100_4933 How about now?

Have you ever heard of putting a pickle ornament on your Christmas tree? Whoever finds it first gets an extra present or can open their gift first. There are many versions to the story. Here is a link on Wickipedia about it.

I thought it would be fun to make little catnip pickles so people can put them on the bottoms of their trees for kitties to find. My niece is going to sell them at the vet clinic with all the money going to PAL, a local shelter. We will be including one in a giveaway soon too. If you crochet, here is the recipe, I looked at a few different ones and made this one up for a baby gherkin.I used a G hook.

Round 1:Chain 2, single crochet 5 into second stitch from the hook.

Round 2: 2 single crochet into each sc ( 10)

Rounds 3 -12: one single crochet in each stitch ( 10)

Round 13: single crochet decrease- 5 times.

Round 14: single crochet in each (5).

Stuff with polyfil and catnip then fasten off.

________________________________________________________________________100_4917I am reading Oliver The Cat Who Saved Christmas by Sheila Norton.

It is a sweet book about a cat named Oliver who brings many villagers together. Oliver narrates as he tells his story to a kitten. There was one upsetting part when he talks of his life as a kitten and something bad that happened, but I was able to get through being this is a fictional story. It is definitely worth reading.

Monday Hops

Hi everyone! Today we are joining 3 hops: Comedy Plus’ Aww….Mondays, Book Date’s It’s Monday! What Are YOU Reading? And Create With Joy’s Inspire Me Monday.

100_9902-2 KaTwo is posing with The Lion in The Living Room by Abigail Tucker. I wish I could say I was enjoying this book, but unfortunately, I find it to be a little boring. It reads like a History text book and tells about bad things that were done to cats centuries ago which was very disturbing.

100_9904 Prancie is posing with a turkey decoration for Thanksgiving. I made it with an old light bulb that I painted brown. Then I added feet cut out of foam and googly eyes and feathers. They are breakable though so you have to be careful.

Make a Bandana Pumpkin

HI everyone! I am joining Create with Joy’s Inspire Me Monday Blog Hop ( I know it is Wednesday). I am obsessed with Pinterest and found some cute pumpkins made out of  bandanas on SadieSeasonGoods. I changed it a little and made mine into a catnip/silvervine pumpkin.

100_9695 100_9722  I cut an orange bandana in half, then folded it inside out and stitched it on 3 sides with the sewing machine. I filled it with polyfil and catnip then hand stitched the top. Then I used embroidery floss* to sew some lines on the pumpkin. And to top it off I stuck a silvervine stick in the top for a stem. I got the silvervine stick from CatABliss on Etsy.

*I only let me cats play with this under supervision because of the embroidery floss. No one has tried to chew it, but you never know.

The word today for #JHC is blood, but I decided to go with eyeball instead. And the winner of Phoebe’s eyeball giveaway is : The Island Cats-Congratulations! 100_9687

And one more thing- pawTree is having a contest to celebrate their new line of treats and Superfood seasonings. You can enter a heart warming story about your cat for a chance to win a gift basket of products and $500 worth of products to the charity of your choice. Hurry the deadline is the 23rd! Click Here
