Phoebe update: Murmur was still there so now we wait for the ultrasound on March 4th.

006It looks like I am now the proud owner of this little ragamuffin. As you know, I brought him in to be neutered. I don’t know if it is the same in all states, but in Massachusetts you have to sign a paper saying if any wounds of unknown origin are found that you will quarantine them for 6 months or they will euthanize. I wasn’t going to allow a seemingly healthy cat get put down. When I went to pick him up, I knew we were in trouble because out paperwork was off to the side. The vet found several injuries on his neck. I think it was from fighting with other male cats, but it doesn’t matter what I think, this is the law. I know if I care for him for 6 months there is no way I am letting him go- I have attachment issues.

Right now he is totally segregated. If after 6 months he seems like he can be introduced to the others then I will get him FELV/FIV tested and go from there. I was thinking of names and so far all I can think of is Daryl the feral. Any other ideas? I will get better photos soon- I hope.

And my last ROAR today is for Here Today Animal Shelter in Brimfield, MA. I am volunteering at their SPAYghetti dinner this Sunday. I am also crocheting some toys to be sold at the dinner too. I am glad that I can help, I never volunteer at shelters because if I make contact with any cat, I want it.

  3. I hope that eventually Daryl can drop the Feral part of his name! But geez, that law seems wrong to me. It’s a good thing someone is looking out for him, even though you hadn’t planned on it going this way.

  7. Oh Daryl is a cutie – very handsome guy but I’m sure right now he’s probably upset and confused…..understandable. Purrrhaps he’ll have a chance to adjust to “life inside” while he’s on his own and will fit in with the rest of your furrrramily after his quarantine. Bless you for helping him……

  8. I think a concatulations is in order then, since you have yourself a new mancat in your life! You’re such a wonderful person, to ensure his safety by taking him in. And I think Daryl (the feral) is a great name for him. He sure is handsome!

    We’re purring and praying for Pipo, Minko, and Mr. Jack Freckles’ dad. And we’re of course still purring and praying for Phoebe!

  11. That’s all I can say is that this cutie hit the jackpot, to have you as his caretaker! I’m thinking you’ll need some time to come up with his real and forever name, once you get to know his personality.

    1. Thank you, I am really glad I signed to take him or they would have euthanized. I don’t know why they are so strict about that. Yes, I will get to know him before an official name- right now I am thinking Fraidy because he is afraid.

  16. Just a note in case Daryl should test positive for FIV, I have had 2 FIv+ cats, that shared food, litter, beds with my other FIV negatives for years and no one was ever infected. It requires a deep bite wound (not play biting). Best of luck.

  21. OMC Awnty Ellen, fank you soooo much fur lookin’ after “Daryl”. Muffins like their cousins Dolls (ie: Me 🙂 ) shuld never be allowed outside as we aren’t equipped to survive on our own like other cats. We completely unnerstand, mommy has those same attachment issues, but we’s never heard of dat law. Daryl is nice. Mommy’s Muffin’s name was Ransom. And you know we believe dat when one door closes another one opens. And you not only have room in yous house and life fur a new addtion, yous also have enuff luv. We’s sorry Phoebe still has da heart murmur, but she kuld be totally fine. Ransom had one and it didn’t bother him lessen he was doin’ lots of zoomies. And he wuld get really tired and outta breath purretty fast.

    As fur da noms from yesfurday, sorry everypawdy liked them but went a little sideways. We tried ’em once when mommy was tryin’ to switch me’s noms. Me wuldn’t eat ’em so we can’t say dat we went wild cuz of them. hope fings settle down fur y’all. Sendin’ purrayers all round.

    1. I will try that name and see how he responds, but I kind of like the sound of Daryl the feral. Please don’t worry about Phoebe, she is acting like herself, she has been a lot more active since she got her new pole right before Christmas. XO and pawkisses from Phoebe.

  25. Daryl is a sweet name. That law seems very rigid. Our Mama would definitely get attached as well after six entire months! Daryl , you have landed in a kind and loving family, lucky boy! We hope you will fit in with everyone seamlessly. Phoebe, we have our paws crossed that the heart murmur is nothing serious.We will come back to check on the results of the ultrasound.

  26. We’re so glad you’re gonna take care of “Daryl” but we’re surprised that they wouldn’t even test him for you. 6 months is a long time to keep him separated from the other cats.

    1. Unfortunately, the only way to test for rabies is to kill them and check the brain. Thank you for the purrs for Phoebe.

  27. TBT here: Just out of curiousity, how is “quarantined” defined? Does your whole house count? Are vet visits allowed? Would an enclosed space outdoors in nice weather be permited for an hour? How close is another cat allowed to get? Is sniffing from both sides of a doorway a violation? And who is going to know?

    6 months seems too harsh. I would seek a cat advocate to negotiate as much freedom and socialization as possible.

    1. Those are good questions and I don’t know the answers. I will look into it. I have him in one small room, the back entryway. At this point he is very afraid and I couldn’t get hin to an enclosed outdoor space if I wanted to. I am going to take it slowly.I figure this happened for a reason and he is meant to be mine.

        1. I think they should have kept it running for another season or 2. It is too odd that so many have died near Mr. Bates- too many coincidences. That is what my Mom says, I must admit that I tend to doze off sometimes during the show. XO and love to my sweet.
