100_4928 Can you tell what these crocheted objects that Phoebe is sniffing are?

100_4933 How about now?

Have you ever heard of putting a pickle ornament on your Christmas tree? Whoever finds it first gets an extra present or can open their gift first. There are many versions to the story. Here is a link on Wickipedia about it.

I thought it would be fun to make little catnip pickles so people can put them on the bottoms of their trees for kitties to find. My niece is going to sell them at the vet clinic with all the money going to PAL, a local shelter. We will be including one in a giveaway soon too. If you crochet, here is the recipe, I looked at a few different ones and made this one up for a baby gherkin.I used a G hook.

Round 1:Chain 2, single crochet 5 into second stitch from the hook.

Round 2: 2 single crochet into each sc ( 10)

Rounds 3 -12: one single crochet in each stitch ( 10)

Round 13: single crochet decrease- 5 times.

Round 14: single crochet in each (5).

Stuff with polyfil and catnip then fasten off.

________________________________________________________________________100_4917I am reading Oliver The Cat Who Saved Christmas by Sheila Norton.

It is a sweet book about a cat named Oliver who brings many villagers together. Oliver narrates as he tells his story to a kitten. There was one upsetting part when he talks of his life as a kitten and something bad that happened, but I was able to get through being this is a fictional story. It is definitely worth reading.

My thoughts and prayers are with all who have recently lost furbabies. I was deeply saddened to read that sweet Fiona had lost her battle against evil kidney disease.

and dear Bhu also went to The Bridge.

  1. If my human still crocheted, she could totally make those gherkins! They’d probably look funny, though, because she was never very good at it.

    1. These are so easy, I am sure she could make them even if she hasn’t crocheted in years.

  2. Another kitty gone to the RB?? Sheesh, will it never end? At least for a while so we can breath?

Those are funny pickles…we meant the idea is funny…thanks for the instructions.
Sounds like a cute book to read.

  3. Love the gherkins! Book sounds good. So sad so many friends have left us. We’ll keep praying for they’re families. We hope all is well with you guys and gals!! 🙂

  4. I used to work in a gift shop and every Christmas season we sold pickle ornaments. They were a big hit! That is a great idea to crochet them and add catnip! So sad about all the pets that have left for the RB. I am reading The Cat Who Came in From the Cold by Deric Longden… I am enjoying it. Must check out your book you are reading.

  5. We have a glass pickle ornament from Germany somewhere in the attic, it’s a fun tradition. My sympathy to all those who have lost their precious pets recently.

  6. I just love reading your hopping posts. You have so much fun stuff to share! I love those pickle toys, and how great that your niece is selling them at the clinic to benefit the shelter! You have the funnest ideas for cat toys.

We, too, are sending our thoughts and prayers to all those whose furbabies became angels this past week. So many have gained their wings lately.

    1. I hope they sell, people usually buy these right up at the register at the vet because they want to reward their kitties.

  7. Oh, we love the pickle ornaments. We’d bettter buy one because Mommy can’t seem to do anything crafty.
We were deeply saddened by the loss of those precious furbabies.
We’ll have to check out your book recommendation.

  9. I have just begun reading Apprentice Cat and so far, I like it.
I am also reading Black Phoenix, as a favor for a writer-friend (thus far, no cats)

AND, M and I have begun putting together an ebook box set of Kazza’s Chatterre Trilogy. Kiara designed a really fine cover for the box featuring Kazza. M and I are busy making the interior formatting consistent for the three stories.

    1. I need to look into Apprentice Cat, I am not familiar with that. Kiara a great cover designer.
