It’s Monday! What Are YOU Reading?

Hi everyone! We are joining Book Date’s It’s Monday! What Are YOU Reading ? and Comedy Plus’ Awww…. Mondays blog hops.

Back by popular demand is Joanie to try another book review.

The monkeys in this book are boring. If you want to read about monkeys, stick to Curious George.

Thank you Joanie, I think you need to ask your boyfriend Simon for some tips on writing reviews. He is an expert, if you want to see one of his reviews, click here.

Despite what Joanie wrote, I liked this book. My Mom recommended it to me because I have a “monkey mind”. This basically means I have an anxious mind that is always worrying . This book gives tips on spotting when one is doing that and how to stop feeding the monkey mind.

I am also reading Do Your Laundry or You’ll Die Alone by Becky Blade. It is filled with motherly advice, most of which my Mom has already dispensed to me over the years. It is a nice refresher though.

I also want to tell you about a book you shouldn’t read. Wherever You Go, There You Are by Annabelle Gurwitch really offended me. It is supposed to be humor, but I found the first few chapters boring. Then I got to the part where she writes about how she can’t feel sympathy for people that ask for prayers for their pets on Facebook. She then writes about Grumpy Cat and calls her a him. Because I was so cranked up about her Facebook comment, I decided to write to the publisher and complain that she made an error about Grumpy Cat and I was surprised an editor didn’t catch it either.Β  I have yet to get a response.

  1. Hi, Ellen–Actually, I’m reading “John Knox and the Reformation”, by Andrew Lang. I’ve quit reading the news for a while. I read a few blogs, including yours, too.

    1. I don’t blame you for quitting reading the news. Thanks for reading my blog πŸ™‚

  2. That second book is one we won’t be reading!! I’m going to recommend the minor one to my Auntie. I think she has a monkey mind too! Simon thinks Joanie’s review is just fine After all, reviews are just opinions and no opinion is every really wrong. We all thank you for the Library of Cats shout out!! Love to all especially my Sweetheart Penny. ❀️??

    1. I think your Auntie will enjoy the monkey one. Joanie is so happy that Simon likes her review. And Penny sends a kiss and she will be featured tomorrow. XO

  3. Thanks for telling us what we should give a try reading AND what to AVOID reading! Imagine thinking Grumpy is a HE! So much for professional editors huh?!

    Hugs, Teddy

  4. Ellen and Joanie, People need to read the part in the Bible that tells us how God cares for sparrow. He wants us to come to Him with our request big and small. What’s important to one person may not be important to another but to God ALL things are important. This Annabelle chick is insensitive and you shouldn’t worry yourself over her. There will always be people around like her. Joanie just give her a Grumpy Cat look to show her how little you think of her book and you’ll feel better. πŸ™‚

  5. The motherly advice book is one i should get, there may be some things i’ve forgotten to tell my children and i’d find them there!

  6. I love that you give such honest reviews. I will certainly not be reading anything by Annabelle Gurwitch. Her comment reminds me of a teacher I had back in grade school. I went to a private Catholic school, and so prayer was a daily occurrence. One teacher, though, would always scold students if they asked for prayer intentions for their pets. She said they animals have souls and so they don’t belong in prayer. She had me fuming, but luckily none of the other teachers or any of the priests agreed with her and so aside from her, prayers for our furbabies were indeed allowed.

    1. Thank you. I had a similar situation with a CCD teacher when I was younger. It left me very upset when I was told that animals don’t have souls so they don’t go to Heaven. I am glad most people’s views on that have changed and kids don’t have to be told that.

  7. Great reviews. We like hearing about the good books and the books that probably aren’t the best ones to read. You all have a super day.

  8. Oh wow, the Annabelle Gurwitch book is definitely neffur effur going to be on Amber’s reading list! TUT TUT TUT!!! It’ll be interesting to see what the publisher has to say about the error…

    Thanks fur sharing the monkey and laundry books, I’m sure Amber will be adding those to her list shortly!

    Bestest purrs

    Basil & Co xox

  9. Annabelle Gurwitch sounds like a complainer! A complainer about other people. If people want to pray about their pets, what’s the harm? And why is it anyone else’s business?

    I started reading Emory’s Gift by W. Bruce Cameron a couple of days ago. So far I’m really enjoying the story and the writing style.

    1. I agree, no need for her to complain about it. Glad you are enjoying Emory’s Gift.

  10. Interesting book choices. I hope you’ll get a response from the publisher. Maybe, if the book goes to further printings, they can fix the error. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  11. What an awww Joanie is. So cute.

    I won’t be reading that book either. Thanks for you rinput.

    Have a purrfect Awww Monday. My best to your mom. ☺

  12. Good Morning, Ellen! Monkey Mind book would be good for me. I am worried at how far I have gotten behind in commenting. I am not new to monkey mind and have read about it before. I would like to read this book because I am an anxious worrier. It has gotten better but I work at doing better every day. I am still not reading anything because we are just crazy busy with family stuff right now. Laughing at Joanie’s book review… she cracks me up! I will pass on Gurwitch’s book!

    1. I had never heard the term monkey mind until this book, it is a quick read and helpful. Joanie thanks you. Never worry about commenting here, I know people get busy- although, I do enjoy your comments πŸ™‚

  13. Oh Joanie…so cute! Why would a cat want to read a book anyhow? Cats already know everything.
    I too tend to worry, or thinking of different scenarios and finally lose sight of what track I was on to begin with! The Hubby is REALLY GOOD at pointing that out.

    1. Joanie thanks you. πŸ™‚ You may enjoy the monkey book, but it sounds like your hubby tames your monkey mind for you. πŸ™‚

  14. Oh, good grief…I think proofreaders are a thing of the past. Unfortunately. We need them! There are errors everywhere, but they are just accepted now. I can be a Grammar Nazi, but it is in a good way! If we correct our mistakes, we become better writers, and I think people, too. Accepting we are wrong, and correcting it, makes us a better, more forgiving human. I believe that. HUGS.

    I will get back to your email today. I am catching up on last week’s blogging stuff. My car is in the shop for a recall, so…wish me luck! XO

    1. I have noticed errors in a lot of books too. I agree that it is better to point out mistakes and learn from them. I hope you get your car back soon. XO

  15. Mom bought the July issue of National Geographic today to read all about hummingbirds. She says she loves me more than them but sometimes I wonder.
    Hugs madi your bfff

  16. Some people just can’t keep from publicly expressing their ignorance. Of course, we should pray for our animals. Sheesh. That’s as dumb as the woman who once said to me that animals have no souls. Sorry, but your review of that book struck a nerve! HA! Perhaps we should pray for her!

  17. We love how you read all sorts of book types. We’re reading Pinpoint, about the history of GPS. It’s interesting.

  18. Our mommy is a worry wart so she should probably read the monkey book! We won’t be reading the second book that’s for sure!

  19. Mommy was so busy reading a very nice book over the weekend. She did not finish the book yet, but almost there. It’s called SONG OF THE CUCKOO BIRD by Amulya Malladi.

  20. Wow, I can’t believe that author said she doesn’t have sympathy for people that ask for prayers for their pets. What a heartless comment!
    As for what I’m reading, I will admit to you that I’m currently reading through the books in the “A Shade of Vampire” series. Vampire books are my guilty pleasure. I’m currently on Book 8 of the series, A Shade of Novak. I’m enjoying the books, but they are definitely mindless entertainment!

    1. Yes, I think that author is an awful person after reading that. Vampires scare me since I watched Salem’s Lot as a child. I know they aren’t real, but I don’t want to dream about them. πŸ™‚

  21. People petcretary works with sometimes tell her to stop stressing…so she too must have on of those monkey minds…howevfur, she needs to stress to find out how to get the things done she says…else they stay undone, MOL!
    But she admits to taking too much to bed with her…which makes her stay awake, she ‘can’t turn off her head’…those are her own words.

    And the Annabelle G lady, must have a very empty den, devoid of pets of any kind. Or else she has a heart of stone…did she not evfur raise any children? Brrr, it makes me feel all cold.

    1. Yes, that lady has a son, but apparently never had a pet or I would think she would have felt differently. I am sorry your Mom has so much on her mind, it sounds like some meditation might help your Mom to clear her mind before bed. XO

  22. This Lady Annabelle has stirred a lot ot peepull uppy! LadyMum iss one all so Lady Ellen! Mee iss glad you rote to thee eddytur! Efurryone KNOWSS Grumpy Kat iss a sweet gurl….. An purrayerss are wunderfull; all of them fur good…..
    An mee-yowin about ‘monkey mind’ mee could sure that book!! An so could LadyMum, mew mew mew….
    Now to thee bookss! LadyMum started to reed “Memory Man” bye Mistur David Baldacci an shee gotted to page 70 an was too freeked out to continue…..shee sayss it iss too dark an deepressin! Nevurr herd her say THAT befur.
    So LadyMum started an Inspecktur Bankss book “Gallow’ss View” by Peter Robinson an shee iss enjoyin it much much more. Mistur Stephen Tompkinson playss Inspecktuyr Bankss on thee BBC show so LadyMum can pickture him….An mee not scared out of mee furss when shee reedss to mee! πŸ˜‰
    ~~~head rubsss~~~ an ***paw kissesss*** Siddhartha Henry~~~ xxxxxxxxxxxxx
    1. The editors should have picked up the Grumpy Cat error-phooey for them. Dark and depressing books are no fun, I am glad your Mum stopped reading it. I am glad you like Gallow’s View. XO and paw kisses and nose rubs my sweet boy.
  23. We are reading The Washington Post newspaper again! TBT stopped because he got 3 months behind reading it, and decided stop his subscription until he caught up. It took 5 months.
    Well, actually that means we were still reading it, but missed 3 months of comics.
  24. We think our mom has one of those monkey minds. She also complains that routinely an earworm will wake her up in the mornings! (Humans.) She is currently reading Return to Wake Robin (One Cabin in the Heyday of Northwoods Resorts) even though she has never a.) been to Wisconsin or b.) had access to a rustic lakeside cabin. She is an old bat who does remember her family renting cottages at the beach, though, so maybe that’s the attraction. Personally, we would never vacation near ANY water.
  25. I love reading self-improvement books! The other book sounds horrid. How dare someone complain about asking for prayers for pets. Obviously not a member of Blogville or a pet parent.
  26. My partner and I take turns being pessimistic. A reminder about a specific joy helps boost my SO. I just have to say a few key words to make a difference. ~grin~ Hope the book helps you. Be well!
