Hi everyone. Time for Friendly Fill-Ins Week 56. Please remember to leave your link at McGuffy’s Reader. You can also answer in the comment section. Thank you to all who participate.

1. A law I would like to see passed is _________________________.

2. My favorite card game is ______________________.

3. With Summer unofficially here,                                   .
4. A favourite Summer memory is                                   .
My answers:
1. A law I would like to see passed is that animal control can’t shoot cats, it breaks my heart to read on other blogs that this happens in some southern states. I even contacted the SPCA, APSCA and Humane Society about this and got no response from any of them- so sad.
2. My favorite card game is cribbage. It is the only one I play. Phoebe loves it when we play and likes to get right in on the game.
3. With Summer unofficially here, we have started planting our garden and I can’t wait to have fresh zucchini.
4. My favourite Summer memory is trips to Old Orchard Beach Maine when I was a child when my folks were still together and my sister was still in school ( she is 8 yrs. older than me).
Here is the first official photo of the kitty I have been feeding, definitely not a skunk.

  1. Yikes, nobody should shoot kitties. That is heart wrenching.

Your not-skunk-kitty looks like he/she is quite handsome…or elegant:)

    1. A law I would like to see passed is all shelters should be no kill, with cage free for suitable dogs/cats. Our local shelter is both, but they do still cage the dogs, though sometimes the pups are given a companion shelter dog. (Their cat room is a fun place to visit and get a kitty fix if you need to have some kitty time. I would go in there when we did not have kitties…or were needing a new one.

    2. My favorite card game is spider, 2 suit, played on the computer..

    3. With Summer unofficially here, my patio is my little oasis with some flowers and a few potted veggies. .

    4. A favorite Summer memory is when my dad would close his business for about ten days and we would go to the (rented) cottage at the beach about 3 hours away. .

    1. Thank you for your answers, I always enjoy them. I love your law. I have not heard of that game, but it sounds hard . I bet you had a lot of wonderful memories at the beach. XO

  2. Have paws crossed for “new kitty” !!! Cribbage was another of my Mom’s favorite card games….and it made her also remember a game she used to like called Mankala which was NOT a card game but FUN. Gosh – humans sure have a lot of memories – all I can remember is that one day I was at the shelter and the next day I was in a nice comfy home!

    Love, Teddy

    1. I am not familiar with Mankala, I need to look it up. I am glad you have a wonderful home Teddy. XO and love to you and your Mom

  3. if you end up with way too much zucchine, remember that August 8 is “Sneak Some Zucchine Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Night,” and i’d be a happy recipient!

  4. I did not know that animal control can shoot cats in some places. It’s so sad that cats’ lives are not valued the way other lives are. And yeah, that black-and-white critter is definitely not a skunk!

  5. That sure is a good looking kitty that you are feeding. So glad you are doing that. I live in the South and wasn’t aware of any shooting of cats going on. I would have to shoot some one if they shot my cats. You all have a great day.

  6. Goodness, I agree with you 100% on #1. And though I’ve never played cribbage, I know that my grandmother was pretty much a pro at it. It looks like Phoebe is, too! Summer sure is a wonderful time of year, and I always love hearing about others’ gardens. I have nothing even remotely resembling a green thumb, and any successful gardening I manage is the result of lots of help from my dad. Your non-skunk kitty is gorgeous! Purrs!

    1. Shhh! Don’t tell Phoebe, but we give her the jokers 🙂 That is great that your Dad helps you garden. The kitty is sweet too.

  7. WHY are they shooting cats???? They sure as heck don’t shoot DOGS!

  8. Haha… definitely NOT a skunk but I can see how there could have been a brief identity issue.
Have fun with your garden. We have a few beans coming up and the blooms are on the tomato plants!
No shooting of cats… what is it with people? Sometimes my anger can’t be contained.

    1. Your tomatoes are way ahead of us. I know, I have zero tolerance for any animal abuse and people abuse too.

  9. Ellen,

I’ve not heard of Animal Control shooting cats. That’s just crazy! I just don’t get that. You might see the need to shoot a large dog because it’s rabid or just dangerous but a cat? I’d think using one of those long pole things with a snarl is all you’d need to catch a cat you can’t get close enough to but then what do I know. It just seems so odd. We visited Old Orchard Beach once but we didn’t stay very long because we were heading to Acadia. I’d like to go back for a longer visit, though. It’s a lovely area. Thanks for hosting and have a good weekend!

    1. I was sad when I read about this on a blog from OK, it is heartbreaking. I haven’t been to Old Orchard since I was a kid- a very long time ago.

    1. Thank you. They stayed friends though and didn’t divorce until 20 years after the fact.

  10. Who knew about shooting cats? I sure didn’t and we live in the south! Maybe someone should find out which states and start a campaign on Facebook or a blog against it. Maybe if the cat loves of those states knew about they would support a law against it! Love the potential new kitty. He looks a little worse for wear but then most strays do!! Hope he/she becomes a part of your clowder! Love to you all, Toby

    1. I know it happens in Oklahoma, that is a good idea to start a campaign. No worries on the kitty, I caught it so it is safe, but segregated until we get a FELV/FIV test. XO and love to you all!

  11. I like your answer to #1 although I’m horrified it’s even needed. Phoebe looks so adorable there on the cribbage board. I love it. It’s so sweet of you to feed that kitty. I hope he or she will be careful out there.

    1. No need to worry about the kitty, I caught her ( I think it is a girl). It is segregated for now, but safe.

  12. We need so many new laws for cats. Just off the top of my head …
    1) Tough on animal abuse (none of this kids being kids BS) – with real consequences.
    2) Ban declawing.
    3) TNR required … not extermination of ferals.
I love that picture of Phoebe on the cribbage board … she looks very pleased with herself 🙂
Handsome newcomer … reminds me of the old Pepe LePew comics.

    1. I agree with all of these ! Phoebe loves to play cribbage ( we give her the jokers 🙂 )
Yes, new kitty does look like Pepe Le Pew, but no smell.

    1. I caught it now and it does seem happy. Next week I will get it tested for FELV/FIV and then hopefully introduce it to the family.

  13. Ooh, look at the pretty kitty! Not very feral, huh? I am attending a city council meeting next week; trying to get the ‘no TNR’ ordinance rescinded.

    1. Not feral, very friendly, but it took a little time to get friendly. Kuddos to you for trying to help ferals.

  14. wavez two ewe dood, most shirley ewe R knot a skunkz….in fact one waz on me lawn two dayz ago N eye had ta fite him off { he was in the house 20 feet away } heerz two a grate week oh end……♥♥ 🙂

  15. It makes no sense to shoot an animal like that. That is surely a crime in the truest sense. That little “pole cat” is blessed to have met you! HUGS!

  16. Maybe write your US congressman and both senators from your state, Also write your state representatives. Keep writing, emailing, and maybe some action will get done. Maybe start an online petition. Have a great week.

    1. My state is good with animals, I am not sure if I write to Oklahoma and other states if they will listen.

  17. I haven’t played cribbage in years. I learned how to play from my Grandpa when I was about 4 or 5 years old.

  18. What a beautiful kitty, Ellen. 🙂

I didn’t know animal control shot kitties and I have lived in the South all my life. I don’t know what they did to them at the “shelters” back in South Carolina, but the meanie man in charge of animal control here gasses them as soon as he picks them up. I think he is a horrible person in general, but that makes him a monster in my eyes. The term “animal shelter” is definitely a misnomer when it comes to those that kill the animals. A shelter is supposed to be a place of safety, not killing. 🙁

Fresh zucchini sounds wonderful! I hope that you have a bountiful harvest!

Phoebe looks might happy sitting there. I’ve never played Cribbage. I have heard of the game, but have no clue how to play it.

    Have a blessed weekend!

    1. I have read on a blog in Oklahoma about shooting cats, so sad. And your animal control doesn’t sound much better. Phoebe loves it when we play cribbage. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

    1. I don’t know who else to contact if the big humane societies can’t help.

    1. I agree, it seems like we have better programs and shelters in New England.

  19. Oh man! Shooting kitties in the south? Definitely need a law prohibiting that!!

I haven’t played cribbage in years! It’s a game I loved to play, too!

I can’t wait to plant a garden – hopefully next year, since we’re still trying to tame the overgrowth from the yard being neglected while this house was empty while the sellers fixed it up. 🙂 I’ll have to live vicariously through you and your fresh zucchini. 😉

Your summer memory is awesome! Have a great weekend! 🙂

    1. I agree, it doesn’t happen everwhere in the south, but it shouldn’t happen anywhere. Cribbage is fun. I will be sure to show lots of zucchini photos 🙂 I hope you have a great weekend!

  20. Gramps used to always plant the garden on Memorial Day and pull it up on Labor Day. Of course, the seasons were different back then.

  21. It makes our Mama really sad to think how cruel people are to animals. How could anyone shoot a cat? It doesn’t bear thinking . . .
Our Mama doesn’t play cards so she doesn’t have a favourite card game!
We bet your Mama must know a hundred and one things to do with zucchini since she loves it so much! 🙂

the critters in the cottage xo

  22. I live in Florida but have never heard about animal control shooting cats. I’ve never played cribbage, I’ll have to look it up and see what it’s about. That’s a cute cat!

  23. Phoebe is so funny sitting on the cribbage board. We do need to get together and play sometime. My sister was seven years older than I am. Not a skunk kitty is gorgeous. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo and Cooper Murphy

    1. Phoebe loves to “play” with us and I hope we can get together to meet and play cribbage. I get confused playing partners though, I am best with just against one person. XO
