Hi everyone! Today we want to tell you about the food we won as part of Stunning Keisha’s #10CK Giveaway for her 10th Gotcha Day. We thought we had won a bag of treats so we were very surprised to receive a Chewy box with a 15 pound bag of Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Dry Cat Food. Penny claimed the box, as you can see the bag is bigger than she is.
Everyone loved it- even KaTwo! That was 13 out of 13 cats that liked the taste. Then a few hours later the wild part kicked in. Prancie was walking around meowing and her pupils were dilated, Joanie was practically bouncing off the walls and Phoebe was very aggressive to Joanie ( much more than when she plays with Prancie).
I decided to look up the ingredients ( I know I should have done that first). The one item that jumped out at me was chicory root. I know it is used as a coffee substitute and is caffeine free, but I am guessing it must be a stimulant. The only other information I could find about chicory root was it has a laxative effect. I am hoping it was what made Phoebe’s heart have the murmur-if it is not heard today then I will believe that was the cause. Has anyone else ever tried this and if so, how did your cat act?
I am not trying to sound ungrateful because this was a great prize, but I just can’t believe all the odd behavior my cats had from it. Chewy is a great company, but I won’t be purchasing this particular product again. And we love CK- thank you for having the giveaway!
Today is also World Spay Day and I am bringing in another feral to get fixed.
This poor guy is very afraid. And he smells a lot, I am sure his odor will go away once he is fixed. I am not looking forward to the car ride though.
I am glad everyone is okay. I think you did the right thing. Watching your cats, and sharing the things you observed is commendable. Sharing knowledge is what it should be all about. In blogging about our pets, this is so important for us and our pets. Thank you.
We should always talk to our vets before feeding anything, food or treats, moist or dry. We can read, talk to ther pet owners, etc., but our own vets should always have the final say.
❤
Thank you. I will check with the vet for now on before changing anything.
Whoa, that is weird! I’ve never heard of that type of reaction from cat food! We only eat canned or raw, and the only adverse reaction any of us has had to any cat food was to throw it up if it didn’t agree with us.
It was very odd.
Wow, how scary! We’ve never heard of something like that before. We’re glad everykitty is okay!
Me too. Thank you 🙂
Wow, that’s really a weird reaction! Thank you for your honest review!
We’ve never tried Taste Of The Wild. While Mom liked the ingridients, other products have appealed more to her. We’ve never heard of chicory root. We’ll be checking back on this comments because this interests us.
So please, leave a comment if you’ve experiences with this food.
No one seems to know about chicory root- I wish someone did. I guess my theory for Phoebe was wrong because the murmur is still there.
WOW…….that’s kind of scary isn’t it. Well, now that you aren’t giving the gang that food hopefully everything is back to normal. Sam does not like to experiment with foods or treats – he knows what he wants and that’s that. BRAVO to you for taking another feral in to be neutered – poor little guy will get all fixed up and not be “contributing” to the feral kitty colony again!!
Hugs, Sammy
Yes, it was scary that they were all acting odd. Sammy is a smart boy. Thank you for your kind words about the feral. XO
YIKES! We hope everyone has calmed down now!
The Florida Furkids
Yes, they are calmer now.
woo hoo! Congrats on the winning!
Thank you 🙂
Wow, that’s… interesting. We’ve heard of tummy upsets from noms, but never behavioral changes like this.
Same here, I have never seen that either.
Really appreciate your honest post about that food! I’ve looked at the bags and cans before, but haven’t purchased any and may not now. Hope there were no lasting effects from that chicory root!
You’re welcome. I wasn’t happy that the first ingredient was chicken meal and it was venison and salmon food- that was about 5th and 6th on the list.
Ellen that must have been pretty scary…
Last Jan 2015 Madi had a rather unusual reaction to C.E.D. dental Chew the Vet gave us I’m very very particular about what she eats. It was never scientifically proven to be that but she was fine one day. I gave 1/2 of the chew. Then the other 1/2 2 days later. All of a sudden her tummy went bonkers. I read the ingredients then had some kind of crazy thin layer on the outside which was identified as something with fish smell to get cats to like them. It was the only thing different she ate in a two day period. All the Vet’s test proved not illness. It took nearly 2 months to get her tummy back to normal. A slow acting prednisone shot was the cure. Pred of course is used for inflammation. Vet said her symptoms indicated inflammation in her digestive tract. I DO NOT GIVE HER ANYTHING DIFFERENT NOW AT ALL!!
Hugs Cecilia
That must have been scary for you too. Poor Madi. I am glad she was OK after that. XO
Oh, wow, that’s really interesting how the food caused such strange reactions in your kitties. Thank you for the honest review, as that helps us all decide what to try and what not to try for our own kitties. Purring and praying for Phoebe today, and for the cute feral you’ve got there! Purrs!
Thank you, glad you appreciated the review. I love Chewy so I feel bad saying anything about what they carry, but I feel the need to warn others. Thank you for the purrs and prayers for Phoebe- murmur is still there 🙁 And I guess I own the feral now – see tomorrow’s post for more information.

My sweet purrince, I still have the murmur so I am having an ultrasound on March 4th. I guess it was not the chicory root because it would have worn off. Penny says thank you. XO and love to you my sweet boy.

I am sure you didn’t make my heart go all funny- you make my heart beat strong. I love you my sweet boy. XO
That is weird to have that kind of reaction. Must have been something in the food for several of them to react. Glad they are all alright now. But still, a very nice gift.
Yes, it is a big bag of food.
Weird ! We never heard of reactions like this, it’s very interesting to learn about the effects of some ingredients. Purrs
I am not sure if that was it, but it really stood out in the ingredient list as something that shouldn’t be there.
That is strange that some of the cats had that weird reaction to the food. You are great to be taking another feral in to be neutered.
Thank you- I now own the feral- story tomorrow.
Thank you for showing Penny! I always love seeing her – she’s my favorite, of course. Odd happenings going on in your cat tribe! I hope everybody has recovered from their chicory root experience. I’ve never had cat food with any chicory – or any food from Taste of the Wild. And probably won’t! I’m looking forward to what the doc says about Phoebe. I hope its good news!!! Oh, and thank you for taking the man cat in to be taken care of. Mom’s trying to get close to a couple of ferals around our house but they remain elusive.
I know Penny needs to get more photos. Poor Phoebe still has her murmur so we will do the ultrasound on March 4th- I wish it was sooner. I hope those ferals get friendly.
That’s interesting! Mommy is going to look at the ingredients in the food we try from now on. Thanks for letting us know.
You’re welcome. I am not sure that was it, but they were all acting strange.
We did a review a few years ago on Taste of the Wild. We never had an issue with it. We liked it at first, but then it sort of fell out of favor by us and the mom didn’t buy it for us anymore. We would suggest you contact the company (not Chewy since they don’t make the food) about the food and tell them how your cats reacted to it.
My vet suggested I contact them too. I will do it first thing tomorrow.
Wow…now that’s an infurrrresting experience I could live without! My sisterly calicos are feisty enough to each other. Hope all are okay at chez Pilch and settled down! I googled this food but didn’t see any useful info. Ya never know…
Yes, it was very strange how they acted. Everyone is their usual semi calm selves now. 🙂
How strange!
Very.
Oh my! That’s quite a reaction! We’ve had samples of those foods and only got a few as treats (no we weren’t tricked but we let Mommy think we were). We didn’t have enough for anything to happen like that though thank Cod! We’re glad everykitty is okay! Thanks for helping the little feral kitty too!
I am glad you didn’t have a reaction. I probably shouldn’t have given a full meal of it at once. More on the feral tomorrow 🙂
WOWZER!!!
What a wonderful surprise!
Kisses
Nellie
PS. Don’t tell my Mommy, but mes started my own blog
http://NellieOnTheEdge.blogspot.ca/
I am so glad you have a blog now Nellie, I missed you so much. I won’t tell your Mom.XOXOXOXO
Hmmmm, I ate it for a long time. I’m always wild but haven’t calmed down since I stopped eating it. The reason TW stopped feeding it to me was I seemed to get itchies. Chicory is a prebiotic and it’s in other foods too. Prebiotics are good for the cats gut and digestion. How much did your cats eat of it?
I give them wet food with a little dry on top except Joanie got 1/4 cup for her meal. Maybe they needed to get used to it. I am still feeding it to Polar Bear and his 2 wives without trouble, but I don’t spend as much time with them to notice.
Mee iss glad mee makess yur heart beet strong Purrincess Phoebe…..
