Hi everyone! I hope your year is off to a good start. Do you still have your Christmas tree up? We do. Mom ordered an ornament that just came in, it is pretty cool-
We leave our tree and all our Christmas stuff up until Epiphany, also known as Three King’s Day. You know how men don’t like to ask for directions, well, it took the 3 Wise Men a long time to find baby Jesus and bring him gifts. They finally arrived on January 6th which is also my Dad’s birthday.
Some people have a King’s cake with a plastic baby in it. And whoever finds the baby has to supply the cake the next year. Being that Dad’s birthday is tomorrow, I thought we could do that.
This is the only Baby Jesus I have and mom says she doesn’t want him in a cake ( he goes on the table on Christmas Eve) plus we would need a really big cake. Apparently, it is OK to put a bean in it instead. To read more about the King’s Cake, you can read my friend LouLou’s blog. Click here.

I have heard about the King Cake! And also there is a King Cake at MardiGras, but there are coins in it…not sure?!
Penny must be thinking, why don’t you take the Baby out of the manger and bake it into a kitty pate cake:)
That ornament is funny…but true!
Yes, it is used for both days. XO
We do still have our tree up. It went up the week before Christmas and it’s still up because we’re lazy. What can I say?
Ours will be up for at least another week because I am lazy too. 🙂
Laziness is underrated! Some things don’t need a rush.
I agree. 🙂
Our tree is staying up until mid-week too. (Also because my human may want to do one more photo session with it.) My human has always wanted a King’s Cake. She is totally secular, but she loves rituals.
I bet she can find one at the grocery store.
We just read Loulou’s post about the cake her Mom is making today. Very cool! Yep that Baby Jesus of yours would need a BIG CAKE to be inside of for sure!!!!
Hugs, Teddy
My mom wants to make Loulou’s recipe. 🙂 XO
That is a very appropriate ornament! I can see your header in the first time in forever!! I still can’t see comments though 🙁
I am glad you can see the header, my friend changed the theme for me. Sorry about comments though. 🙁 XO
You know Penny, the first time I had ever heard of King cake was when I first went to New Orleans about Christmas time way back in the late 90’s. So I enjoyed your story here and seeing your baby Jesus too. Yes, He is much too large to go in there. I think I would not want to use a bean though I understand why someone might. Happy Birthday to your Dad! One of my human brothers has one on the 14th. He took a box of presents to open on the 14th home with him when he was here for Christmas. XX
My Dad thanks you. Happy Birthday to Katie’s favorite brother. XO
Penny, I like your Mom’s new decoration:)
Thank you. 🙂
I love the ornament it speaks volumes
Hugs Cecilia
Thank you. 🙂
We love that ornament, how appropriate!
Thank you. 🙂
They make tiny, pink plastic babies to go in the King Cakes, and a couple of years ago there was a huge todo on Facebook about the fact that the babies are naked! Silly people.
Yes, a bean works as well, and in south Louisiana, you have King Cake on Epiphany and then every Friday until Lent begins at school and work and other places where you regularly go. Whoever gets the baby brings the cake next week. Some stingy people won’t eat a piece of the cake until they know the baby has been found so they never have to bring the cake themselves.
Many years ago, before the mass manufacture of the pink plastic babies, people would sometimes use a coin, generally a penny.
You can make a very easy King Cake of your own from crescent rolls, you lay them overlapping each other in a circle with the very pointy ends out, spread jam around the circle, and then tuck the pointy ends over the jam and under the center so it stays in a circle and bake it. Top it with a simple icing and colored sugar, and you have a fun cake.
Maybe i need to get the ingredients and take pictures, we used to do this in cooking class in homeschool co-op.
That ornament is funny!
That is very stingy to not play fair with the cake. I have seen the plastic babies at the Dollar store, but I only need one and they had a whole package. Thank you for this recipe. I might do it for Mardi Gras. XO
Chaplin: “Nothing wrong with a really big cake!”
Good point. 🙂
That ornament is purrfect!!!
The Florida Furkids
Thank you. 🙂
Thanks Penny! I did not know that the arrival of the 3 Wise Men was on January 6th! Thank you for teaching me something new! You are a very wise kitty Penny! 🙂 <3
Awww…thank you. XO
I learned something new today. I always heard of King cake being eaten during Mardi Gras, not for the Feast of the Epiphany.
blogging weirdness today … this post shows up in Bloglovin, but not on your blog home page. But if I click a “Penny’s Tips” category from last week, there it is again. I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone 🙂
Sorry about the blog issues- WordPress is like the Twilight Zone. 🙂
New Orleans does it like no place else, so I’m told!
I have heard that too. 🙂
We used to take our tree down after new years day, but we don’t decorate anymore. I get that leaving it up is a good thing. Christmas trees make me smile.
Thank you for joining the Happy Tuesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Happy Tuesday, Ellen. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to the kitties. ♥
Thank you. 🙂 XO
Love that ornament, so true! Interesting about the King’s Cake. Here it’s associated mainly with New Orleans, on Epiphany and also throughout the Carnival season that starts the next day. But I’ve seen them here in grocery store bakeries, too. Here it’s decorated with green, gold, and purple, the Mardi Gras colors. Cute Penny picture! XO
Thank you. XO
Love the new 2020 Christmas ornament… Made me chuckle.
Thank you. 🙂 XO
That is a purrfect ornament! We usually keep the tree up until after Ukrainian Christmas (Epiphany)…but with David’s passing I just could not do that this year and we took the tree down on Sunday. And we did not know about the Cake! Great thing to do! Happy Birthday (tomorrow) to the Cat Daddy!
Barb
I understand why you would not be in a celebratory mood. Cat Daddy thanks you. XO
That ornament is great!
I love it.
That cake sure sums up 2020 perfectly!!!
Woos – Lightning, Misty, and Timber
It does.
We took down our Christmas decorations yesterday. 😞 I used to leave them up until Epiphany and we used to save one present for our kids to give them on that day. I giggled at your new ornament. I ordered one of the grand girls to commemorate 2020. Hope your year is off to a wonderful start. xoxo
That was a fun idea to sve a gift for Epiphany. Thank you. I hope your year is off to a good start too. XO
‘STINK, STANK, STUNK” SUMSS 2020 UP REELLY well Penny an Miss Ellen…
LadyMew sayss if this iss 2021 then why does it still feel like 2020??
**purrss** BellaDharma
That is a darn good question. I am sorry I don’t know the answer. I hope it gets better. XO
Our decorations are still up! Not coming down anytime soon either. I saw that ornament at Hallmark the other day…cute and so true!
I didn’t know it was at Hallmark- this must be a knock off.
Our tree is gone…the mom takes it down after New Year’s Day. She ordered a 2020 ornament too…it’s a cat wearing a mask and holding a roll of TP and a can of Lysol.
That sounds like an appropriate ornament too.
Happy Birthday to your Dad! Have fun tomorrow at his party!
Thank you. 🙂
Happy early birthday to your dad! We have a ceramic Christmas tree and it’s still up. We are just too lazy to put it back to the closet 🙂
Dad says thank you. XO
Happy Birthday to your Dad, Penny! Our tree and decorations are down. In the past we left our tree up until the Epiphany but anymore we take it all down after New Year’s Day.
Dad thanks you. XO
Penny,
We have our little tree up for no other reason than we aren’t ready to dismantle it to put away for the year. I know I gotta do it but I’ll procrastinate just a little while longer. Happy Birthday to the Dad!
Dad thanks you. 🙂
That is really fun to know Penny thanks. We love your ornament too. It sure did Stunk MOL
Thank you. XO
Humans have some strange customs. Kitties are all about the basic goodies. 🙂 Be well, and Happy New Year!
Thank you. Happy New Year!
That ornament is cute! And funny. 2020 was quite a stink but I have hope that 2021 will be better. xo
Thank you. 🙂 I hope it is better for all> XO
I didn’t know that about January 6th, I learned something new today!
Glad you learned something new. 🙂
