Happy Thursday everyone! I hope you are all having a nice week. I am enjoying the nice cool Fall weather. I think the kitties are too as they seem to be playing and chasing each other more now than they were when it was hot and humid.
Today is behavior day and I want to continue on my rant about declawing. I am talking about human behavior here. I really don’t understand why anyone would want to live with a cat if they were going to declaw it. They are making it into something it is not by doing that. When one is in a relationship and wants to change the other that means they shouldn’t be together to begin with.
Last week when my mom and I went for pedicures, I asked the lady about her cat. It is bad enough that she overfeeds it and jokes she won’t put it on a diet. Now I find out that she had her declawed when she found her years ago. I explained the procedure and she said no, it is just removing the nail. I gave up trying to explain because it was a hopeless cause, but I did decide that I will NEVER go to her again.
Enough of my rant for now, sorry I get so passionate about kitty issues. Have a great day!

Imho, the veterinarians DO NOT EXPLAIN enough…people just think it’s a nail clipping but it’s an amputation. I’ve stopped several friendships with people who just waive me off, because if their VET does it, it must be okay for the cat, right? WRONG! There is a movement in this country, to get this hideous procedure abolished, called The Paw Project. Here in Michigan, we are fighting an uphill battle because it’s become so ingrained into the veterinary culture that they are afraid to be shown up…it’s political! Cat’s paws are less important that saving face by the veterinarian associations. Time to make it stop, people! There, you got two rants for the price of one!!!!
Good rant- I like rants when they are imprtant and this topic sure is. I would like to refuse to go to any vet that is willing to do it, but there aren’t many vets around me and they all seem to do it.
This is a barbaric act and can leave the animal in pain for life – thank goodness we live in the UK.

We always feel heavy hearted when we hear of people who declaw their cats. It’s always for the same reason…the people don’t want their precious furniture “ruined”. We think you made a brilliant point in saying “when one is in a relationship and wants to change the other, they shouldn’t be together to begin with!” It is natural for a cat to mark their territory. There are so many ways a person can accommodate this. They can provide scratchers, cat trees , boxes, etc. for them without maiming them for life! I know of people who let their cats out to roam outside property lines because they don’t want their furniture ruined by them and it is easier for them to keep the cats (no littler boxes to contend with), but that is an entirely different discussion for another day. Sigh.

It is frustrating, people that care more about furniture or don’t want to deal with litter just shouldn’t have cats. Thank you for complimenting my point.
Getting passionate is what it is all about! We had our very first kitty’s front paws declawed almost 30 years ago. I was ignorant then, and I think most vets and human pet parents were as well. UGH! How can a human be in such denial! And everyone wonders why we cats act like humans aren’t very bright. 🙁

Declawing cats is actually illegal in most of Europe and we simply do not understand why that is not the case over your way.
All of us Chans were trained when very young to have our claws trimmed regularly by our #1. We actually purr when she does it!

As The Poupounette Gang says above, declawing is illegal here. What is great is that you tried to explain that woman what declawing really means. It’s not a hopeless cause : if the vet didn’t explain clearly what declawing means, talked only of “removing nails”, and you, not being a vet, tells her the truth, it’s not really a surprise that she doesn’t listen to you… We hope she’s going to hear what is really declawing several times, have finally a light turning on in her brain, and realize that you told her the truth ! Yes, I hope she understands someday, but she is the type that cares more of furniture so she would do it again.
