Goodbye My Sweet Lucy

Over the Rainbow Bridge, Lucy

        1/1/1999- 9/11/2015

I love my Lucy so I let her go to the bridge yesterday. It wasn’t right to let her slowly starve so I could have her longer. My heart is broken. I may take a few days off from blogging and I will eventually get caught up on everyone’s blogs. Thank you all for your purrs and prayers and kind words. And thank you Ann of Zoolatry for this beautiful graphic.

  2. I am so sorry for your loss. There are no adequate words for this kind of sorrow. You were blessed by Lucy, and she was blessed by you. You will always be a part of each other. Love is like that. ♥ Peace.

  3. Dear Ellen
We are so very sorry to read about Lucy’s passing. That was a very difficult decision for you but one that was the most loving one for Lucy. What a beautiful photo Ann created..it is as classy as Lucy was

  4. We are so sorry to hear about sweet Lucy. We know it is so hard to make that final decision but it was a great act of love to not let your beautiful Lucy suffer. We are thinking of you and keeping you in our prayers during this very sad time. Warm, gentle hugs.

  5. Sometimes you have to let those you love the most go because it’s the most unselfish thing to do. I know TW will someday do the same for me. She’d never want me to suffer either. Sending comforting purrz to those Licy left behind.

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I did love Lucy too much to let her suffer so she could be with me longer.

  6. We are so, so sorry for your loss of your sweet Lucy. Sending our gentlest purrs to you and much, much love. We will be holding you in our thoughts and hearts.

  7. Ellen and family we cry with you for losing such a wonderful girl as Lucy. She does look splendid in her picture – treasure how lovely your girl was and remains in your heart.

    1. Thank you for your very kind words and for caring. I will always love Lucy and I know I did the right thing, I would rather hurt than have her suffer.

  8. There are no words that can be said that will take the pain away. I can’t say I know what you are feeling because we all grieve in our own way. What I can say how wonderful it is for you to have Lucy in your life. I use the present tense because she is with you forever. Heart to heart. Soul to soul.

  9. I’m heartbroken right along with you. I know how devastating it is to lose a beloved furry family member, but you made the right choice for Lucy’s sake. My heart goes out to you and my prayers are with you.

  10. Special Thoughts for you. I’ve been there and it is so hard! Just know that you made the right choice for Lucy and she’s now at the bridge waiting for the day that you will be together again.

  11. Oh, my. we know just how sad and devastated that you are feeling, we watched meowmy do that for our Suki, and she did it for Toki, too.
It rips holes in your heart.

Sending purrs of condolence and sympathy to you at this difficult time.
Meowmy adds more of those and virtual big hugs, too.

  13. We send our Best Purrs Of Comfort to you. We detected it was coming, but no time is ever good. There is a time (turn, turn, turn). It was Lucy’s time… Your love for her will remain.

  14. We are so sorry to hear that your beloved Lucy has crossed Rainbow Bridge and know you will miss her so very much. It is so hard to let go but it is the kindest thing that you could have done.

  15. We send our gentlest purrs to you and know your heart is breaking for the loss of your sweet girl. The decision to let her go was very hard, I know! RIP Lucy xxxx

  16. I am so, so sorry, more than words ever can convey. I had to let Annie go several years ago and it was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done in my life to date, even though it was the only merciful option.

You did the best, kindest, most loving thing possible for Lucy, and it’s the burden of being human that we torture ourselves over “what ifs”, that we mire ourselves in guilt and that we grieve so deeply. I hope that you’re at peace in your heart knowing you acted for Lucy’s Highest Good, that you did all you could for her.

Nicki and Derry are sending soft purrs and I’m sending Universal Light. Lucy’s spirit is free of any suffering now and she *always* will be with you.

    (((Hugs)))

    1. Choosing to let Lucy go was the most difficult choice I ever had to make, but I couldn’t let her suffer another day just so I could keep her with me. I am sorry that you have had to do the same, it is awful. XO

  17. Bless your heart…….the “kindest” thing is often the thing that causes US the most pain. We picture Lucy dressed “to the 9’s” in her boa and hat prancing around at the Bridge making new friends and hugging old friends……….we send YOU the biggest hug of all though.

    Love, Pam and Sammy

    1. Thank you for the words of comfort. I would rather have pain than have Lucy suffer. XO and lots of love to you both.

  18. We are so very sorry to hear about your loss of sweet Lucy. May she rest in peace. Our hearts are broken…we know the pain you are going through. Sending hugs to you today.

  19. Oh we are so sorry that Lucy had to go. Just know that the kindest thing you did for Lucy is to let her go. That is such a hard thing to do. And know that Lucy knew lots and lots of love while she was with you and that you provided a great home for her. Sending lots of hugs and purrs/

  20. Ellen, you did the right thing, as heart breaking as it was. One day we will be reunited with all our lovely loved ones and what a happy time that will be. I hope you find solace in knowing what a difference you made in Lucy’s life and you gave her the best present you could – your love. Our purrs and prayers are with you.

  21. Dear Ellen, sending our love and sympathy to you and to your family. Lucy had a wonderful love filled life, and I know she will be in your heart forever.

  24. It is so difficult to lose a precious love like Lucy and we are all so sad that she needed to depart. As a family who once waited too long to do the right thing, please know you absolutely did what was best for dear Lucy. That doesn’t help the pain though. We send you many gentle hugs and all of our love.

    1. Thank you for your words of comfort, it is so hard to play God and decide something like this- I hope to never have to do that again. XO

  25. Oh Ellen, we are so sorry to hear of Lucy’s passing. It sounds like you made the right decision to let her spirit go. Our prayers are with all of you.

    ~MamaLisa

    1. Thank you, it was a difficult choice, but I couldn’t let me girl suffer.
      Thank you for the prayers.

  26. Ellen, I am deeply sorry and my tears are for you and the family as I know the pain is acute when we have to let them slip away. She knew great love and she was happy. And as Paula of Twinkletoes said above, you made a huge difference in her life and one day, we will see our babies again.

  27. I’m so sorry for your loss. You made an unselfish, loving choice for Lucy, as always throughout her life. Sending hugs a warm thoughts to you.

  28. We are so very sorry for your loss. We’re sure it was a difficult decision, but you showed your love for her by letting her go. RIP, beautiful Lucy.

  29. …. and St Francis said, “Come little one, there is nothing more I can do for
you here, don’t be afraid”……and St Francis gently picked up Lucy and carried her into the kingdom of heaven…..when the little cat looked around, she realized everything St Francis told her on her journey was true….heaven was beautiful beyond what mere words could express…..

….. and Lucy saw there was no pain, suffering, fear, sickness, hunger, thirst or sorrow, until she looked down and saw the family and friends she had left behind. ……and for a very brief moment, the little cat too, was filled with sorrow.

… then St Francis bestowed Lucy with a set of gossamer wings and said, “Use them to return to your family, when their need is the greatest, as nothing can separate your bond of love. hold each other in your hearts and your memories, until you are reunited again at heaven’s door.”

… and when the little cat tried on her wings, she knew nothing was impossible…… when there is….love

…..you are and always will be a beautiful girl Lucy, with love from Boomer, Dai$y, Tuna…..and Dude and Sauce too…❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    1. Thank you sweet tabbies- I do believe this. I know she is an angel now. And thanks to your Mom for emailing me such a caring letter. XO

  32. Ellen, as difficult as the decision to let Lucy go must have been, we hope you take solace in knowing that you ended her suffering in the most compassion way possible. You gave her a long, full , life of love. Her needs were more than met ; she was surrounded by creature comforts, toys, treats, food and a loving family. She was your special reading buddy and she felt special because of it. She was so fortunate and we know that realizing what a long, loving and treasured life you gave her will help soften your grief along the way. Rest in peace dear Lucy. You were loved. You will be missed . Ellen , we are sending you and your family all our love and heartfelt condolences.

the critters in the cottage and Sophie XO

    1. Thank you for your very kind words of comfort. She did have a wonderful life that I wish all kitties could have. XO

  33. Ellen each of us has been where you are, we share in the collective loss and understand the Grief. It is always hard to say farewell to one we love so deeply. It is with the foreknowledge that their lives will be far shorter than our own that we enter into a loving agreement with them. That we will take care of them and love them and if we must, at great detriment to ourselves, we will chose to let them fly to the RB out of the loving compassion we hold for them. Each cat takes a little of our heart and then each cat we love adds love back. Lucy has been your loving companion for 16 years, not long enough, because it’s never enough. But you gave her what you promised her when she came into your life and I know she is grateful. Your heart will hurt forever, but it will slowly, unnoticeable at first, heal softly and gently. You will always carry your sweet girl inside of you, and love never dies. We are holding you in our purrs and prayers.

    1. Thank you for your very comforting and true words. So true that each cat takes a little of our heart, Lucy took a very big piece. XO

  34. So very sorry to read this, and I know the hurt is huge, but what you did was by far the kindest and most selfless thing. Much respect for that, along with many tears.
    With love, Karin

  35. We too are saddened at Lucy’s passing.
We know she was much loved and cared for all of her life.
It is never easy to say goodbye to a beloved kitty.
    Sending you comforting purrs.

  36. We are all so sorry that Lucy had to leave you. We know no words can make your loss any lighter but please know you are in our thoughts at this very sad time.

  37. We’re so sorry for your loss! We’ve been thinking a lot about you and Lucy, but I was too scared to read your blog – 🙁 You’re brave, Ellen, and I’m sure you did the right thing. I wished I didn’t need to suffer when I’m dying, but unfortunately, humans don’t have the same privileges.

    1. That is a very good point- if only no one had to suffer at the end. Thank you for your kind words and for your friendship. XO

  38. I am so sorry for your loss. You had to make the hardest decision but for Lucy’s sake it was the right and only one. I know your heart is broken and the pain feels unbearable, but remember all the happy memories you have with her to help you through this saddest of times.

That’s the hardest decision and thing to do, but it’s the most humane. I saw this on Austin’s blog and had to comment.
I hate hearing this, but time does heal.
You’re lucky to have the beautiful photo from Ann.

    1. Thank you for visiting us and writing such comforting words. I love the graphic Ann made and I have many photos of my Lucy all dressed up.

  56. We are so very, very sorry for the loss of our sweet, beautiful baby. We didn’t know or we would have included her in our Caturday Night Meow. We hope you find comfort in knowing you have a beautiful angel watching over you.

  61. We were so very sorry to hear about Lucy. Your love for her gave her a wonderful life while she was here. Purrs of comfort and paws of sympathy

  62. I offer you my deepest condolences. I know all too well how heartbreaking this can feel, but please take comfort in knowing that you gave Lucy the absolute best life she could have ever hoped for, and that includes that final selfless decision you made for her sake. Your love for each other will live on forever, as will your beautiful memories of her.

Purrs, prayers, and hugs to you.

  63. The Human said she understands how hard it is to do what is best for our sweet kitties whose time has come. She has had to help her kitties in the past, and she has solemnly promised me that when my time comes she will be brave like you were and Do The Right Thing even though it is so very hard. She says that a wonderfully kind vet told her to remember that we kitties are free from worry and dread–that’s a Human thing. We only know the love and care of our Humans and we are not afraid. Your sweet Lucy is probably hanging out across the Bridge with Mr. Teeth and Clarkie who are first in line to greet a pretty girlcat. We are sending you love and purrs, and we know the other kitties will step up to purr on you and comfort you. XOXOXOXO

    1. Thank you and your human Spitty. It is hard to do the right thing, but I would rather suffer than let my Lucy suffer. Thank you for the love and purrs. Lots of love to you too XO.

  64. You were right to let Lucy go. With my Tungsten, I too could have kept her longer, by forcing her to eat and drink by syringe, but she would have disliked it intensely, and there would be no improvement, just continued unhappiness. What a terrible decision to have to make, but one that was necessary. Godspeed, Lucy.

  65. I’m so sorry to hear about Lucy. So very, very sorry.

Perhaps Lucy will meet up with Nissy in Heaven. Together they could romp through the vast fields of nip, chasing butterflies. And every now and then, they might stop to gaze down upon us and blow us kisses, just to let us know that they knew how much we loved (and still love) them.

    Purrs,
    Seville

    1. I hope Lucy and Nissy are in Heaven together enjoying their nip. Thank you for your kind words of comfort. XO

  66. I’m so sorry about Lucy. She had a wonderful home & family & love with you. I lost my Lucy to cancer a little over two years ago and I still miss her dearly.

  67. Sorry to be late in posting my condolences, but know that I am sending purrs to you today. It is hard to lose a friend that has been a part of your life for so long. She knew love and kindness throughout her life and that is all any of us can hope for in this world. She was blessed and will not be forgotten.

  68. I’m so sorry that you’ve lost your darling Lucy! I hope your many happy memories of her will bring you comfort and, in time, joy. Purrs and hugs from StrangeRanger

  69. We are so sorry that sweet Lucy crossed over. And on the same day as Dorfie crossed over. Many hugs and purrs and purrayers to you during this very difficult time.

Thank you for putting Dorf’s picture on your blog as well.

Luf, All of us at Forty Paws and Maw

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I will always love and miss her. Today was tough, he ashes were returned to us.
