Hi everyone! Today is the hubby’s birthday! 004Here he is with Millie. He is really quite the cat lover and they all love him. I was going to treat him to dinner, but he now has my cold so we will wait a week or so.

It is also medical day. It always amazes me how much I don’t know after living with cats for over 20 years and currently having 15 cats. I went to the low cost clinic with Polar Bear for the 3rd time in as many weeks. He is much improved with his sneezing and congestion so the vet figured the antibiotic he is on is working. He will be on it for 10 more days.

This is what I learned: Blood work should not be done to test kidney, liver and thyroid values until 4-6 weeks after a cat recovers from a respiratory infection. The values can look normal when they really aren’t because of the infection. I appreciate that I was told this instead of wasting my money on blood work that is inaccurate.

I also learned that hyperthyroidism can mask kidney disease. I am hoping that Polar Bear lost weight because he cut back on eating while he had a respiratory infection. I have had him for 6 years and he was at least 2 when I found him so I agree that his thyorid and kidneys need to be checked. He has a heart murmur grade 2 which could also be from thyoid issues or something else. The vet also thought his kidneys felt irregular, but it could just be how he is made. The important thing is that he is improving on his antibiotic and hopefully everything else will be fine too, but I won’t know until March. I was told to wait 4-6 weeks from when he is fully recovered.

    Our human’s only had 4 cats in her adult life and she’s already learned way too much about health issues like hyper-thyroidism (angel Annie had it) and asthma (Nicki) has it. Plus chronic idiopathic cystitis (Derry has it).

  4. I’m glad PB is taking his medication like a good boy……it’s also interesting to know about the blood work and when it should and should NOT be done. Here’s hoping there’s nothing else going on with him though! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CAT DADDY – I hope he has a super fabulous and kitty-filled day!

  5. Happy Meowday to da Cat’s Daddy. Sorry him not feel very good. Weez’ll be purrayin’ fur hims and you so yous not weketch da cold. And dat’s so pawsum dat da clinic wuz lookin’ out fur yous pocket book. We wish more Vets did dat, stead of orderin’ unnecessary stuffs just to pad da bill.

    1. Thank you, it is just a cold that he caught from me. I am lucky that the clinic was honest about the blood work instead of wasting my money. I have been many places that padded the bill though.

    I hope Polar Bear continues to improve.
    When Flynn has his thyroid levels checked, the vet always gets the liver and kidney function checked as well because underlying kidney disease can show once the thyroid is where it should be.

    1. Hubby says thanks for the birthday wishes. That is smart of the vet to check those. I keep praying for Flynn to get stronger every day. Phoebe and the other kitties are purring for him too.

  20. Happy birthday to Cat Daddy. I’m glad Polar Bear is feeling better and that the vet advised waiting to do blood work. Hopefully at only 8 years old his kidney and thyroid function are both normal.
