Hi everyone! Penny here and I am starting a new feature called Penny’s Tips.
I will give you a tip of something you can do with a penny. Now please don’t go telling me in the comment section any tips because I already have 11 tips ready and I don’t want to have to go all tortie on you with tortitude.
My first tip is to add some to cut flowers because the copper will act as at as an acidifier preventing the growth of bacteria.
Pennies made before 1982 are made of 95 % copper and those made 1983 and later are mainly zinc with just a light coat of copper.
Please note these dahlias are poisonous to cats so I just posed for this photo and mom put them back in the dining room ( no cats zone) . For the ASPCA list of more poisonous plants , click here.
Penny, I certainly don’t want you going tortie on me!
I won’t. 🙂
I had two torties over the years, and both were full of attitude and I loved them both and miss them terribly.
Torties are great 🙂 Sorry yours are no longer with you. 🙁
My human didn’t know about the tip with the cut flowers – she will have to try that next time she gets some from her boyfriend.
P.S. He only gives her roses, since they are non-toxic to cats and we don’t understand the outrageous concept of having a cat free zone.
I hope she gets some roses soon. It is outrageous having a cat free zone.
Oh, I can’t wait to know what all penny tips you have for us, Penny! I had no idea about this cut flower tip, and I know I’ll learn lots more from you.
Thank you 🙂
Interesting – we didn’t know dat one!
Thank you 🙂
We like the idea of Penny tips 🙂
We need to did hard for pennies as we no longer make them in Canada.
Mum does have a jar of them though 😉
Purrs Georgia,Julie and JJ
We didn’t know they were discontinued in Canada. Glad you like my column 🙂
Penny! My Mom said she “used to know that” …….how she could forget about pennies in cut flower water I don’t understand but then again she’s getting OLDER you now! Thanks for the tip!
Hugs, Teddy
You’re welcome 🙂
That is some great info on the pennies. Who knew??? Also Penny, it is great to see you. You are such a pretty tortie. Have a great day.
Thank you for admiring my beauty. XO
Gosh … a penny for your thoughts … and we’ll be getting lots of penny-thoughts, and good ones! This is a new one for us! Thanks!
Thank you 🙂
I immediately grinned and thought, “Oh, Boy. This will be fun.” Thanks, Penny!
You’re welcome 🙂
Oh no, please don’t go tortie on us! We LOVE your tips.
Thank you 🙂 I won’t go tortie on you, I will save that for Millie.
Oh, I didn’t know that. That’s a great tip!
Thank you 🙂
If I had a pair of penny loafers I could insert a penny in each shoe. Remember penny loafers? I didn’t think so.
Have a fabulous day. ☺
I remember them well on the girls!
I know what they are, but I never had any 🙂
We love this new feature! I didn’t know a penny would keep all that nasty film from developing on the inside of the vase. It’s so hard to clean out well! It’s interesting how the composition of our coins have changed – especially when copper was so expensive.
Glad you like my new feature 🙂
What a great new feature. We didn’t know about putting a penny in a vase of flowers
Hugs madi your bfff
Glad you like it 🙂 XO
Thanks for the tip Penny. We did know about the cut flowers but had no idea of the penny’s copper contents circa 1982. So we learned something new today. Now Mommy wants to look thru her piggy bank. How silly! We think we’re going to like the new “Penny” feature. Never having had a tortie. we haven’t experienced tortitude first-hand.
Thank you, glad you like my new column 🙂
Thank you, Penny. That’s a great tip! I have lot of pennies that are sitting in a tin..I can learn how to use them 🙂
I will tell you what you can do with them.:)
Got a bucket full of pennies I cannot seem to spend. Maybe I should sort them out. I would have lots of help!
I will give you lots more tips so hold on to them 🙂
Interesting tips and info Penny.
Thank you 🙂
We have heard that tip before but didn’t know if it was true. We believe it if you tell us it is so.
Thanks for trusting me 🙂
While i knew about silver killing germs, i had no idea about copper. Thanks for the great tip!
You’re welcome 🙂

Thank you. XO
Too bad we don’t have pennies ! We wonder if “Swiss centimes” coins work as well… Purrs
They will if made with copper.
Well jow, that makes a lot of cents!
🙂 3♥♥
MOL! 🙂
That’s a great tip, Penny! Unfortunately, Mom gave up on fresh flowers eons ago because some of us like to eat them. She’s a spoilsport.

Hi Penny! This is a super tip, and what a great idea for a series. Could you let your mom know we have Phoebe’s glasses, and as soon as Lexy or I cooperate for photos we’ll be sending them on to the next kitty? Thanks!
Thank you. I will tell my mom.
Hello Penny! I did not know about the penny for the flowers. You can bet I will be trying that the next time CH brings me flowers. I think Penny’s Tips is going to be fun and very helpful!
I hope you get flowers soon 🙂
We didn’t know that, Penny. Though we don’t have fresh cut flowers in our house much because Wally always knocks the vase over. But we’ll remember that if we ever do.
Penny, we did not know about that use for pennies. Thank you very much for the tip. We look forward to hearing the others. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo and Cooper Murphy
You’re welcome, glad you liked it 🙂 XO
That is an excellent tip and I had no idea about doing that! I’ll try it next time I have fresh flowers in the house. And don’t worry, I don’t have any penny tips, so I won’t spoil anything!
Thank you 🙂 I won’t go tortie on you.

Granny’s grannie always did that, Penny. Those were the days, huh? Great tips! Extra Pawkiss?❤?
Thank you sweet Binky. XO
Great idea! (Pretty impressive that there’s a no-cat zone with multiple cats. 🙂
Thank you. I have to so I can have plants 🙂
You can do the same thing with real silver dimes and quarters as well…
Someone here made a huge artwork with about 250,000 pennies…a portrait of Abe Lincoln! It won a grand prize at the Grand Rapids (MI), artprize, an annual exhibition of judged art .
We didn’t know that dimes and quarters would work too. I would love to see that art, it sounds like the button art- but more expensive 🙂
We are catching up on some reading and didn’t know about this tip.
Glad I taught you one 🙂
You need to help your mom write a book about you, maybe call it a Penny from heaven.
Thank you. 🙂 I like that. XO
My tortie, Motor, woke me up this morning messing with my feet. Her way of saying, ‘get out of bed and feed me!’
Awww..that is sweet. 🙂
