To Catch a Cat

Hi everyone! I have a great book to recommend today. We were given a copy to review  of To Catch a Cat How Three Stray Kittens Rescued Me by Heather Green. It is one of the best books I have read in a long time.

I love memoirs, especially ones that include cats so this was the perfect combination. And as an added bonus, it didn’t make me cry, it was very uplifting. The author tells of how when she was first dating her future husband, they rescued 3 feral kittens from a neighbor’s backyard. This brought them closer together as a couple and helped her see what was important in life.

They were very smart about the rescue and didn’t just try to grab these kittens. Her boyfriend took a class to learn about ferals and they borrowed a trap from a woman involved with TNR. From these first kittens, they continued on to save 65 total. I don’t like to give away many details, but I highly recommend this book to all cat lovers.

I wish I had gotten to read this before dealing with Brody. I am hoping this book will help people understand feral cats and want to join in with TNR and socialization of kittens. The book’s release date is July 5th, but you can preorder on Amazon.

*Disclaimer- we received the book for free in exchange for a fair review. All opinions are my own.

  1. This sounds like an interesting story. I like cats but cats don’t like me. They trigger my allergies. Come see what I read last week. Happy reading!

  2. Sounds like an interesting read. And bonus that it might help with Brody.

    1. It is, and yes, I did get some tips for Brody- I wish I had read it before Brody.

  3. Most times, books about animals are always uplifting. Sad ones always makes you ask more questions, but yet in a positive way too. Thank you for sharing the book 😀

  4. Sounds like a great read. I know cats are cats and you need to understand them to be successful. Apparently these two did very well.

Have a purrfect Awww Monday. ☺

    1. It is a good book, they did well because they researched and learned instead of jumping into it. 🙂

  5. Sounds like a good book! And you did very well with Brody…he looks quite at home with you now 🙂

the critters in the cottage xo

P.S. No shades as of yet but I will be sure to let you know when they arrive!

    1. Thank you, Brody is a sweetie. It is taking those shades a long time to get to you. XO

  6. That looks like a book that will help lots of peeps to be inspired to rescue.

We finally were able to add your blog to our Bloglovin feed…and after the bad blog-post with glitches we stopped getting emails of new postings, so we had to go and hunt you down each day, MOL! We are sorry you had all those troubles…and glad they seem to be fixed mostly now.

Now we have to convince the petcretary to pen some verses in that journal…thanks so much!

    1. I am glad you are able to read my blog and get it on Bloglovin now. I know all my side badges are missing still, but at least you can see the post 🙂 I can’t wait to see what your Meowmy writes.

    1. We have been lucky, no fireworks yet, but we have the windows shut and ac on so maybe we are not hearing them which is fine with us.

  8. I think you did awesome with Brody. Every cat is different and needs a different way to handle. Mom said that you are an experienced cat lady that know how to handle things.

    1. Awww…you are too sweet. Brody was my first feral and I got lucky- he is a sweetie. XO

  9. What a great review! Our mommy likes the fact that it didn’t make you cry since she stays away from books that make her cry. It’s not just that they make her cry in that moment but she keeps remembering things and will continue to cry for a long time afterward. She’s weird that way.

    1. I completely understand. Once you read something sad, you can’t unread it, it continues to haunt you. Your Mom will love this book.

  10. I like that you mentioned that it didn’t make you cry. You never know before you go into reading these true stories. I will be adding it to my list!

    1. I love to read cat stories, but they usually make me cry so I was thrilled this one didn’t.

  11. Hi Ellen,

This is Heather Green. Thank you for the nice review! We brought in our feral Oona, who was the mother of the kittens in this story. And all ferals are different. I read through your blog and it looks like you’re doing a great job with him. Slow and steady, it seems with real feral adults, right? Kittens are so much easier.

    1. Thank you for commenting, I truly enjoyed your book. I was very pleased when I read you had brought Oona inside even though she hid a lot, at least she was safe. Brody has taught me patience, I tried to rush it and it set him back a little. He has come a long way now. I hope you write another book, I am sure you have many more stories to tell after rescuing so many.
