Monday is for the Birds

Happy Monday everyone! Today is fun and games day, but first I must tell you that the treat crisis of yesterday was resolved. I went to Wal-Mart ( on a weekend I NEVER do that) and bought several bags of treats. 002

I know you all love bird TV. One of the cheapest birds to feed are hummingbirds. You can get a feeder for less than $5 and make your own mix, there is no need to purchase that red sugar-water. 002

For the food,you add 1 cup of sugar to 4 cups of water and bring it to a boil in a pan on the stove or in the microwave. I just heat it in the microwave in my glass measuring cup. Then let it cool before filling your feeder. We don’t completely fill the feeder because it would go bad in the heat before they can finish it. It is important to clean the feeder every time you feed because it will get moldy which wouldn’t be good for the hummingbirds.

Sammy had a great time yachting with Bailey the Boat Cat at Cat Scouts yesterday. His friend, Charles helped him find a great outfit.

  1. I’m so glad you mentioned about cleaning the feeder – some people don’t know to do that, and it’s dangerous for hummingbirds to eat food that has gone bad.

    And yes, the feeder has to be cleaned furry well. We have a furry small one, because that helps it from fermenting too. OMC!! Imagine a drunk hummingburd, MOL!
    We refill and clean it evfurryday! But its easy to access:)
    Isn’t it sweet when those little helicopter dudes sit on something?!

    1. That is really nice of you to clean it every day. My hubby is in charge of it and does it every other day. It is fun to watch them when they finally stay still.

  4. We don’t get hummingbirds in Britain but I love my bird table – usually full of sparrows and bluetits while collared doves, blackbirds, robins and starlings peck around the base. The birds love the bird bath too, especially the blackbirds, but I clean that frequently. As you say, I don’t think everyone realises that birds are susceptible to bacteria.

    1. A bird table sounds nice- you have a lot of variety. We feed cardinals, mourning doves, etc. in the winter, but not in the summer because of bears. I am surprised bears don’t go for the hummingbird juice.

  11. We tried and tried and tried to feed the hummers only to have ants invade each and every time. No matter how I tried to thwart them the ants won. So I planted hummingbird plants instead.

    1. We hang our feeder on a shepherd hook so my hubby sprays the pole with ant spray and it seems to work. I told him I was afraid it would get into food, but he only spray the ends. I also have a little water cup that hooks on and you hang the feeder off of that so the ants get trapped in the water. Flowers are nice too 🙂

    1. Yes, we get hummingbirds from May-October. They are fun to watch for us humans and kitties too. Purrs to you too.

    We don’t have any humming birds here. We have humming flies and humming mosquito. The first we like the second love my mom when they bite her 🙂

    1. I wouldn’t like any kind of mosquito biting me and those sound huge.

    1. I think everyone has lots of squirrels. Sorry you don’t have hummingbirds, they are fun to watch.

        1. That is a very sweet name and with her light colored furs she is a Buttercup. All my cats have several names 🙂 Phoebe sends her love, but she is hiding under the covers on the bed- we had a storm at 4 PM and she is still there- wouldn’t even come out for dinner. XO

          2. I don’t go under the bed, I get right under the covers on the bed. I am a purrincess, I can’t sleep on a floor silly. That was nice of your Mom to sing to you and calm you down. If my Mom sang. there would be no safe place to hide. When she was in the college choir, she was asked to mouth the words- MOL 🙂 I am very proud of my sweet purrince and I know you could protect me.     1. Sorry, I know you hate Walmart. I did stop going there for a year, I used to send the hubby to get the litter though ( it is cheapest). Then I started getting a few things here and there. With 15 cats, I need to get bargains wherever I can. I apologize in advance for Tuesday’s post.

  23. That hummingbird feeder sounds like a good idea. I buy a large bag of Stella and Chewy’s, not as cat food but I give them a few morsels as a treat. It is healthy, they love it and the cost is about the same per ounce as the treats.

    1. I will have to try that and see if my kitties will like it. I don’t like to do a lot of treats, but there is no stopping Grammie 🙂

    1. You are my very brave purrince. When I hide under the covers, I pretend you are right near me. Nylablue was brave. Spooky is brave, he lets mOm vacuum him -that is what I have been told, I wouldn’t stay around to watch.Love, Phoebes XO- paw and nose kisses too my sweet boy.

    1. I have not seen that one, but if you like it then I know I will too. I like Frank Sinatra- my Mom always plays him when she is cooking. Mom always has Smart Food , that is popcorn with cheese on it 🙂 Paw kisses and nose kisses and head rubs- oh my 🙂
