Happy Tuesday everyone! Today is Medical Day and the topic is mites- icky mites. Luckily, we have only had the problem one time. When we adopted Tallulah, she had dirty ears, but the vet didn’t think it was mites. I am a bit obsessive about cleaning ears and no matter how many times I cleaned them, hers were filthy. I ended up bringing her to a different vet that had a machine that lets you see them and boy did we see them wiggling all over. Here is a link to the causes, symptoms and cures: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/cat-care/ear-mites .
The best way to cure ear mites is to use Revolution. The best way to avoid them is to keep your cat indoors. Tallulah had them because she had been outside when we took her in. Some of my kitties have waxy ears, but they don’t have mites. If your kitty scratches his/her ears a lot you may want to get a mite check.
If you haven’t liked us on Twitter yet, please do by the end of the day today to be entered to win the cat spatula, cookie cutters and catnip pumpkins. If you don’t Tweet, just leave a comment and as always thanks for reading! I will announce the winner tomorrow.
Knocking wood, we haven’t had an ear mite problem. I am concerned about my friendly ferals, but vet’s won’t prescribe Revolution without seeing the ‘patient’, and that’s not an option. Patty have been so scratchy recently, that I’m considering trapping him to get to the vet. First, I’m trying my home remedies for a little while; if no change, then I’ll bite the bullet and take him in.
I don’t understand why you need to bring the cat in to the vet for Revolution, but not for Advantage and Frontline. I would have gotten Revolution for our fleas, but I wasn’t going to bring 15 cats in for office vets.
Thanks for the info on those nasty ear mites! Sam goes outside but like you, I’m OBSESSIVE about checking his ears and he’s never had them……since we have a couple of “visitor kitties” who stop by for meals I’ve kept an EXTRA eye on Sam even though he’s never around either of them.
Hugs, Pam
Good idea to keep checking.
Thank goodness no mites here. All of us have been indoor cats since coming to live with Momma!
Glad you have no mites, indoors is safest, but there is no escape from fleas as we learned this year.
The cat before Sparkle had ear mites when my human found her – the vet made quick work of them with her first checkup.
They are easy to get rid of with one dose of Revolution.
We have never had ear mites, but thanks for the link. Better to be prepared in case it should happen in the future. XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

Hope you never get them Dezi and Lexi.
LC, The-Cat-Who-Came-Before, turned out to have earmites when she arrived as a kitten. In fact, they were so bad that she developed an infection which caused her eyes to run badly. TBT only realized there was a problem when she bumped into furniture coming to her food bowl. Everytime she slept, the rhuemy discharge dried and stuck her eyelids shut!!! Fortunately, she already had a scheduled initial vet exam for the next morning. It took a few days of constanty dabbing her eyes with a wet tissue before the medications got rid of the mites and infections.
Poor LC that must have been awful.
My pets have never had mites before. Touch wood.
You are lucky, knock on wood. Thanks for visiting us, I will head over to your blog now. We love making new friends.
Thanks for visiting. I will add you to my reader so I come back again.
I have never had ear mites but mum keeps a check on everything for me. I get Frontlined every month and wormed every three months.
Your mom is very smart, better safe than sorry. And thanks for visiting us.
Fortunately, no ears mites here ! Purrs
