Lucy

Lucy’s ultrasound revealed that she has cancer in 3 places along her GI tract: the pancreas, G I lymph nodes and colon. She is on prednisone to see if it will help her eat. I was under the impression this was going to buy us some time, but it doesn’t sound promising. I had sent the vet an email about some alternative treatments and she wrote back that if Lucy did not eat by Friday then the prednisone isn’t helping and I should make that decision. I am not prepared to do that right now so please pray that we get some time.

I am so heart broken and upset. I have always gotten Lucy the best care. She had blood work in June and it fine. The latest blood work from last week was even pretty good yet this evil cancer was hiding inside her body. I am praying for a miracle- hoping what they think is cancer is an inflammation or something.

  1. I read about Lucy on POTP – we are sending BIG POTPs out to you tonight and will pray for her every day. She’s such a beautiful kitty. It’s horrible when these things happen, but so much more shocking when everything has been going along so well. You are in our hearts and prayers.

    1. Thank you so much for your prayers for Lucy. And thank you for taking the time to visit us. Lucy is very special to me.

    1. Thank you, that was very kind of you to add her to the POTP blog- she needs all the prayers she can get. XO

  2. I am so sorry to read this very sad news about Lucy. Only you can decide whether you trust the vet’s assessment or need a second opinion. I am sure that your bond with Lucy is a strong one. You and she will know what decisions need to be made, and when to make them. Please know you are both in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs.

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I do have a special bond with Lucy and will know when it is time. As long as she is still getting around and eating some, I will fight for her. I just ordered something that I hope will help. XO

  3. Not again. Just about one year ago, we were told that Kyla had 1 to sic months left because of melanoma and most likely three months. She almost made it to Christmas. We know and wish you well.

  4. I’m so sorry that your sweet Lucy has been diagnosed with cancer. If it’s any consolation to you, two of my kitties had lymphatic / intestinal cancer and check-ups just 6 months prior showed nothing obvious with the blood work or through the vet’s physical exam. I’m sure you and your vets did everything possible to figure out what was ailing Lucy, it’s the insidious nature of cancer that it’s difficult to diagnose.

Hopefully the prednisone will kick in. I hope you have more quality time with Lucy and you don’t need to make any decisions before you feel you’re ready. But I know you will do whatever is best for her.

    Purrs.

    1. Thank you for letting me know about your kitties. It is frustrating to know that we tried with blood work and exams yet the cancer was hiding in our kitties- I know that happens to people too. I thought the pred. was working, but tonight she is not hungry. XO

  5. We came from the POTP blog and we are friends of Madi. We are so sorry to hear about Lucy’s diagnoses of cancer. We will keep you in our prayers
    hugs

  6. I have traveled this road myself before. Why or how do cats get this? It’s a question that cannot be answered. I wish I knew. You are all in our thoughts.

  7. Oh, Ellen. I’m so sorry for those bad news. :'( I’m sure you got Lucy the best of care. I can’t even imagine how you’re really feeling, but it must be terrible. You and Lucy are in our thoughts. 🙁

    1. Thank you or your care and concern. I am devastated, but still fighting as long as Lucy is willing to.

  8. These are really not good news ! I think in Lucy’s interest, just let her live the best life possible and don’t bother her with the vet anymore. If she starts to suffer it is better to let her go. It’s very hard to take this decision, but it would be very egoistic to insist ! I had to go through that 3 times in my life and I can tell you it was terrible !

  9. Oh, No.
We all are sending major purrs and POTP fur sweet Lucy. And pawyers, too of course.
And more fur you, Miss Ellen. Is=ts so hard when we can’t doanything to change what is…but yes miracles do happen…meowmy knows this from herself. She is a living example of that:) So hoping fur the best and Lucy will let you know what she wants/needs.

    ((((( Hugs )))))

    1. Thank you for your prayers and your very kind words of encouragement. She ate this morning and a little this afternoon, but not tonight. I am hoping the prednisone works better than that. I ordered a supplement that is supposed to be great- hoping for that miracle. XO

  10. We’re so sorry to read this news and are sending our purrs and purrayers to Lucy and to you. Others already have left good words of wisdom about a second opinion if you feel that’s warranted, about letting go if/when it’s time, about quality of life. None of us is ever ready to let our beloved fur companions go, it’s the hardest act of mercy we must do. We hope you still have quality time with each other… We know you will act for Lucy’s Highest Good, whatever that might be.

Purrs and peace to you both.

    Nicki, Derry and Kim

  11. Ellen you know how I feel about this……it’s just so sad and heartbreaking and all any of us can do is make sure Lucy is comfortable and loved and if there’s a possible treatment that will work for her to give it a try. Cancer is a horrible disease for anyone or anything to go through………..and I pray that all of you will be able to just LOVE each other through whatever is to come.

    Hugs, Pam (and Sammy)

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I will know when it is time to give up, but as long as she is trying ti fight, I will help. XO

  12. Oh we are so sorry about Lucy. We sure are sending lots of purrs and prayers. Just know you have taken excellent care of her. Nothing you can do about cancer coming. Enjoy what time you have left with her. And just know she has known all kinds of love while she has been with you.

    1. Cancer is very awful for animals and people. I have been lucky to have her as long as I have. Thanks for the purrs and prayers.

    1. THank you – she ate well earlier today, but now she is not hungry. She takes the pred in the morning though.

  13. This very sad news brings tears to moms eyes. My fur sibs will all be purring and praying that the prednisone helps Lucy’s appetite and that the ultrasound was wrong . We know you will do whatever it takes to help Lucy.
    Purrs,hugs and love.
    Scout Charles & mom

    1. Thank you Charles and your Mom, you are very sweet. THank you for the purrs and prayers too- she needs all she can get. Love and hugs from Lucy and I XO

  14. Ellen, I am in tears at this heartbreaking news. I am so so sorry. That there was no illness forehand makes it even more shocking maybe as there was no hint that precious Lucy was sick. God bless her and you as a family. I am deeply sorry.
    Love and purrs and prayers.

    1. Thank you, I appreciate your kind words. I am heartbroken and very frustrated that even with frequent exams and blood work it was undetectable.

  15. I am so sorry to hear this sad news. Our prayers and purrs are with you. I know you love all your kitties so much and it is heartbreaking to hear news like this. Miracles can happen and I am praying for one for Lucy.

  16. We are so sad here for Lucy and we are purring like mad for her..we hope that she stays comfy and that she feels all the POTP everyone is sending…all our loves Bev xxx

    1. Thank you for your kind words and purrs. She is still resting comfortably, but I will know when it is time.

  17. I am so, so sorry…I wish there was something I could say or do to help. Cancer is so very evil and unfair. Please know that we are purring and praying like crazy that the meds work and that Lucy has more time with her wonderful family. {{{HUGS}}}

    1. Thank you for your kind words, cancer is an awful thing for anyone- and so sneaky. I appreciate your purrs and prayers too.

  18. Dear Lucy, I send prayers and POTP to you… and a big hug for your mom…. I hope you will have as much time as possible together … and maybe there is a way… I cross my paws for you…as hard as I can.

  19. I’m so sorry this is happening. Please don’t beat yourself up about caring for her. I felt the same way about Tucker. He’d had blood work in May that was perfect, and by mid July he was gone. Take it day by day and let her tell you how she’s feeling. Sending hugs.

  20. Oh, we were shocked to read the email from Ann with the news about Lucy. We will have prayers and purrs for her and for you, that the rest of her days will be happy ones, and that she will fly away easily when the time does come. Hugs as well.

  21. We had a similar situation with my Fawn abut 15 years ago, sad that she was only 10 years old, but two days after beginning high doses of prednisone with no response, the third afternoon she came trotting down the steps and was all over me. We had three months before it all came back, and it was very fast, but I am still grateful for those three months.

    1. Thank you for your kind words of hope. Tomorrow will be day 3 on the pred. and I hope she perks up more. XO

  22. Ellen, please don’t beat yourself up about Lucy’s care. You know (and we know!) you take great care of your cats ; both physically and emotionally! Cancer is an insidious and random destroyer. Allegra, our little maltese dog had cancer. She was never sick a day in her life and looked the epitome of health and then seemingly out of the blue, she was struck down by it. The kindest thing you can do is to make certain Lucy doesn’t suffer.Your love for her will guide you to make the most merciful decision to ensure that. We are sending you all our love and support.

the critters in the cottage xo

    1. Cancer is an awful and sneaky thing. THank you for your kind words. I won’t let her suffer.XO

  23. We are very very sorry to hear the news about Lucy.
Maybe a second opinion with a oncologist vet???
If they give you the same results I would ask about palliative care.
Don’t let someone try to make you feel you MUST make a decision if Lucy seems be doing as well as she could under her circumstances. It is your decision based on Lucy, not on what the Vet thinks. Sorry if I sound over the top, I just don’t want you to be put into that position.
Sending you many comforting purrs and prayers for your beloved Lucy.

    1. Thank you for your kind words and the prayers and purrs. I agree with your thoughts on this, I don’t like being told that Firday I need to decide. I am still praying for a miracle. XO

  24. Oh, I’m so very very sorry! I saw this on the POTP blog and had to come offer my condolences. We went through the same thing with my kitty brother Scribbles at the start of the summer, and it’s just heartbreaking. Big hugs to you and your pack! I hope Lucy stays pain-free and happy.

  25. I’m so sorry to hear the devastating diagnosis and send hugs and purrs. Some cats recover and there are amazing treatment options. When our friend’s cat from Cole and Marmalade had cancer last year, I told him to do crowdfunding for the pricey treatment and he did. Marmalade is in full remission. A lot depends on where the cancer is and how aggressive it is but don’t give up.

    1. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. I am praying the prednisone will increase her appetite because nothing else can really be done unless she eats.

  26. lucy…..pleez ta tell yur mom if her can… ta seek a second opinion, if for noe other reason than to be …sure….sew her noez eggs act lee what course oh actshun two take……we R total lee sorree yur mom hurd thiz news; as all ways, de manee blessings oh St Francis two ewe; him will never leeve yur side; ree gardless….if any one can pull out a miracle…he can….we troo lee bee leeve thiz….tell yur mom ta listen two her “gut”……coz 99.9999 purr cent oh de time; it’s tellin her ….de trooth ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

    1. Thank you for your words of encouragement. I will keep giving her all my love and attention and praying. XO and lots of love to you all.

  29. I’m so sorry to hear of Lucy’s struggles. My first cat ever, Mila, had cancer that was only discovered at the last minute (and it was too late), but this was many, many years ago and a lot has changed since then. I hope it’s a mistake, and if not, I hope there’s something that can be done. My cats (Frodo and Sookie, and my Chihuahua Raxl) and I are sending positive vibes to Lucy!

  30. This is not the kind of news anyone wants to hear and we’re sorry to know Lucy is not doing well. Our hearts go out to you as you deal with what is best for Lucy. We hope she has much more quality time with you. Hugs.

  31. We all are so sorry for Lucy’s troubles. We hope and pray that all will be well with Lucy. Please know that we are all praying for you for the strength to go through these next few days. Blessings for both you and Lucy. Love always.

          2. Phoebe is a good nurse, she got out of it when KaChoo died, but now she seems to be helpful again. She sends you paw kisses and nose kisses XO and love.

  33. I’m so sorry to hear this news about your Lucy. I agree with others about getting a second opinion, with an oncologist if possible. I know it’s expensive but I think very worth it. Years ago, my kitty Pickles had lymphoma. He was put on pred and it did buy him some extra time but of course all situations are so different. I so hope it’s not cancer, or if it is, a second vet/specialist will come up with a good treatment plan for her.

  34. Oh no! I just read about Lucy and am so sorry. I sure hope the prednisone perks her up and give her more time with you. Purrs and prayers for all of you.
    xxoo

    1. P.S. We are so sorry that we have been MIA lately. With our move, we haven’t been able to keep up with visiting. I hate that we have missed the posts about Lucy. Please know that we are thinking of you all and sending lots of love.

  35. We are so very, very sorry to hear this news about your precious Lucy. We will be continuing purrs and prayers for her. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers as well. Hugs for you and some nose kisses for sweet Lucy

  36. I’m sorry we just got similar news ourselves about our Sheltie. We were waiting test results that came this morning, but he was doing really well. His energy, eating, and overall attitude had turned around and so everyone hoped the issue was IBS not Lymphoma. Well sadly, today we comfirmed.

Lots of prayers for you and your family as you go through this. It is heart breaking.

    1. I am sorry you got bad news too- it is an awful thing. I hope you can get some extra time. I will pray for your Sheltie and I thank you for your prayers.
