Smashing Pottery and Other Creative Obsessions: Memoir of an Artist

Hi everyone. I have a great book to tell you about today. When I saw the title, Smashing Pottery and Other Creative Obsessions: Memoir of an Artist by Evelyn Arvey I knew I had to read it.

*Disclaimer: I received a free Kindle copy of Smashing Pottery and Other Creative Obsessions: Memoir of an Artist in exchange for a fair review. All opinions are my own.

As you all know, I love to craft so this title pulled me right in. The author is a true artist though with a degree in fine arts so her art was a lot more complicated than anything I have tried. I enjoyed reading about the process and all the fun she had. She also entered several art fairs that were very difficult to even get into and she was accepted for many types of art including pottery and jewelry making.

I laughed when she wrote about wanting a kiln because I have been down that road.  She wanted hers for pottery and I wanted mine for slumping glass bottles. My fun kiln days ended before they began when I found a free kiln online and my hubby hurt his shoulder (requiring surgery) when we moved it. I later gave it away. She ended up buying a second one and crafted many beads for bracelets and earrings.

The author included directions for several of her art projects- all above my skill level. I do highly recommend this book for all artists, creatives or anyone that can quite figure out what they want to do with their life.

My new camera arrived and this is the first photo I have taken with it. Trouble hopes she is awww worthy. We are joining Comedy Plus’ Awww….Mondays .

  1. This sounds like an interesting read, especially for aspiring creatives! I think we’ll forgo any activities involving kilns, but pottery, specificallt teapots (filled with nip tea) would be right up my street, pots of the pan variety are definitely in Mrs H’s territory 😉. Thanks for a great review.

  4. A long time ago, I did a lot of ceramics. I looked into getting a kiln. It was expensive but something I could manage and over time save money. Fortunately, I paused and eventually my ceramics phase was over. I had so much stuff and no where to put it. Even friends were hoping I wasn’t bringing them a “gift” when I stopped over! I enjoyed doing it. I think my candle stage was next.

  9. It sounds like a fabulously fun book, even if you all you get to do is read about the art (which would be me).
