Hi everyone. I got some bad news today about my Sammy. I am trying to stay hopeful, but more than likely he won’t be with us much longer.

He had been drinking more so I took him to the vet last week. His kidney values were bad then, but the vet thought cutting his thyroid dose would help. It did not. His values got worse. Some of that was dehydration, but the vet told me he needs IV fluids. He ended up with 100ml sub Q today and will spend the day at the vet tomorrow getting the IV meds. I was told that is to buy some time and she doesn’t even now if it will help. If it does help, his thyroid is still going to kill him if he can’t be medicated. Right now he is too weak for a thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine.

I want to spend every moment with him (unfortunately I will lose 12 hours with him at the vet tomorrow), but other than that, I plan to be with him. Plus, my brain is focused only on him right now so I can’t concentrate. I will try to visit your blogs because I care about all of you and your kitties, but forgive me if I don’t get there daily.

If he improves a lot, I will be back soon. I am praying the numbers improve as the dehydration is treated and it isn’t as bad as the vet thought- I am an eternal optimist. I have also been down similar roads many times so in the back of my mind, I am realistic.

Any purrs and prayers will be appreciated. I know it is wrong to have favorites, but Sammy is my favorite. He chooses to always be with me and we are very bonded. I spend more time with him than with any other person or cat.

  5. i am so incredibly sorry to hear about Sammy! Zulu, Frodo and Amarula are sending prayers! I know that we are not supposed to have favourites but it’s so hard not to and it’s such a special bond and so hard when a favourite is ill. Sending you lots of love

  9. Oh…We are at a loss for words. We have our paws crossed and our POTP healing purrs and healing vibes headed Sammy’s way. We hope the fluids help and that he is able to bounce back. Socks ate a special diet to control his hypothyroidism. It was Hills Science Diet and after he got used to it he seemed to like it a lot. He couldn’t take the pills they made him sick.

  25. Hugs and best wishes for an outcome that favors poor Sammy. Hugs for you, too. These are the times our fur friends need us most, and they are the times that are the hardest for us to do. Please don’t reply to this. You need your time to deal with Sammy, not acknowledging comments.

  26. You already know – my dear friend – that I understand TOTALLY your relationship with Sammy. I know how incredibly hard it is to watch as they fail late in their TOO short lives. I certainly will be praying you have as much time with your Sammy as possible – I know your vet will do her best. Give him a special hug from me and Teddy – I know even the Angels are hoping you and your Sam will have a lot more time together but I also know they will take good care of your boy one day too. My Angel Sammy will make sure of that.

  27. I am so sorry to hear this, Ellen. I hope the IV meds will help bring his values back down. As you may remember, Flynn became sensitive to most medication and couldn’t have thyroid meds. The vet put him om Pred. which controlled his numbers to a certain extent. Maybe that would work for Sammy. My love and prayers go to you both.

  74. Oh Ellen I am so sorry. It is such a hard reality to face. We love these sweet fur babies and we know how much they depend on us. We will pray, We know there is still hope and you are such a good mom. Get your rest and stay close to Sammy. What a precious sweetheart you have in him.   75. Oh my goodness, Ellen- we’ve missed so much, and we’re so sorry not to have stayed up to date. Me and dad are sending purrs and prayers on Sammy’s well-being. You should never apologize for not posting/commenting, etc., as we all know all too well how it is when one of our furbabies isn’t doing well. Just keep us posted as you can and you know we are all keeping you and yours in our thoughts, hearts and prayers. And not to turn the attention, but dad most certainly knows how it is when one knows there’s not much that can be done but hold your dear one close as much as possible. He remembers what he went through with Orbit and Isaac before him.
