Hi everyone. I just finished reading another book from NetGalley.
- I received a free e-copy of Mornings Without Mi by Mayumi Inaba, translated from Japanese by Ginny Tapley Takemori in exchange for a fair review. All opinions are my own.
This book was first published in 2014 in Japan and is the memoir of a woman and her relationship with her cat. She first finds Mii as a kitten in 1977. She was stuck in a fence, most likely put there by some awful person. For the next 20 years, Mii is her best friend, child and constant companion. I enjoyed the love story part of it because I love cats and have been very bonded to several of them over the years. I also enjoyed the beautiful poetry at the end of each chapter.
There were some parts I didn’t like that I want to warn sensitive people about. I know I appreciate knowing things ahead of time if they are going to bother me so I can choose to pass or not. The author referred to several strays or neighborhood cats that did not have good lives. This is in several chapters so you may want to skip this book if that will bother you. Overall, though it is a beautiful love story.
And before we go, we are joiningย Comedy Plusโ Awwwโฆ.Mondays . The girls taught Dusty some cheers last week.
That sounds like it was a great book, but the bad parts, well..maybe she was trying to convey that her kitty was loved and not going to be treated like they were – yes, sometimes reality is sad or hurtful.
Dusty is SO patient! That is a cute cheerleader outfit!
That is probably what she was trying to say. Dusty is perfect. ๐ XO
Oh, those nieces. Just too funny. Mama laughs every morning at their antics and the kitties’ antics, too. Love the title, Life Without Mi……but sad, too. Mama couldn’t read it for love or money. But we love your book info!.Ever since Covid and even before, she says “the world is too much with me”…and tries to find positive thoughts and stories. What a wuss.
Thank you. ๐ I understand. I try to avoid sad too. XO
That sounds like a lovely book. I think she wanted to convey that not all cats have a good life even though Mi did. Dusty makes a good cheer leader.
Good point. Dusty thanks you. XO
Hee hee- Dusty the cheerkitty. That sounds like a heartwarming story, even if some parts are unpleasant. Dad says it reminds him of our blog’s founder, Orbit, who made it to 22 years and was, for the most part, dad’s constant companion through good and bad. Have a good week, Ellen. Dad’s on vacation, he’s getting another year closer to 100 years old this week, and he and mom are gonna be off doing what he calls staycation stuff.
Happy Birthday to your dad!
It looks like all Dusty needs is a couple of pom poms extra and she’d be off and running as a cheerleader.
She has pom poms. ๐ XO
Thank you. It would bother me endlessly. I had better not read that. And I appreciate the warning. I can’t stand stories or pictures of animal abuse. As others have said, I can’t unsee anything.
I wish I had been given a warning. XO
That sounds like an interesting book that sends a worthy message. Dusty is an adorable cheerleader.
It is. Thank you. ๐
Thanks for sharing what sounds a very interesting memoir and relationship.

You’re welcome. ๐ XO
I agree Ellen I am with you abuse to elderly, children and animals isn’t something I avoid if I know it is coming. Watching the ASAP shelter commercials breaks my heart.
Dusty you are too cute
Hugs Cecilia
Thank you. I change the channel when those are on. Dusty thanks you. XO
Non-fiction books often has really sad parts to the story. Unfortunately that’s how life goes. Dusty looks so cute as a cheerleader. Did the others teach her how to spell out the name of your blog? ๐
Thanks for dropping by my place while I was away on vacation. We had a lovely time. The weather was perfect with only one day of really wet conditions. Thankfully Helene’s disaster wasn’t felt too much here at home that I can tell. The damage was done mostly southeast of of us. Our beloved Blue Ridge Parkway was hard hit forcing the closure of the entire parkway and as we traveled home this past Friday, we noticed much of the section of I-40 going toward Asheville shutdown because of damage. I just can’t imagine how those poor folks in western North Carolina must have felt or are feeling being isolated. Anyway, it’s good to be home. Now to get back to regular life again!
Have a good week, my furriend!
Thank you. ๐ Glad your area was safe. XO
I’d sure skip that book but I’ll stick around and look at beautiful Dusty instead!
Dusty thanks you. ๐
Awww, Dusty is most adorable in her cheer outfit.
Sounds like a great read.
Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week, Ellen. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to the precious kitties. โฅ
Thank you. ๐ XO
Dusty looks adorable.
The book sounds good, but I don’t think I’d want to read those sad parts.
Thank you. ๐ Same here, I avoid sad if I can. XO
Chaplin: “Dusty! Do you know my favorite cheer?”
Charlee: “I’m not sure *I* know your favorite cheer. What is it?”
Chaplin: “Gimme an T! Gimme an R! Gimme an E! Gimme an A! Gimme a T!”
Charlee: “Oh, all right. I do know your favorite cheer then.”
That is her favorite too. ๐ XO

You’re welcome. ๐
Looking good Dusty! I have a similar cheer leading costume for one of my dogs.
Thank you. ๐
Sounds like a real winner of a book. Love seeing Dusty in her cheerleading costume.
Thank you. ๐
Love and hugs to you and yours, Ellen, and Dusty does look adorable. ๐ And thanks for the warning; I don’t think I’m up to reading sad stories just now.
Thank you. I try to avoid sad too. Love and hugs to you as well. XO
Awww, Dusty – so precious. Will you give a cheer for our Chiefs and our Royals who are both playing big games tonight?
Woos – Misty and Timber
Dusty says Go Chiefs and Royals!! XO
Adorable photo, Dusty! This sounds like a really good book.
Thank you. XO
It is hard knowing so many cats in every country have a hard life and it doesn’t have to be this way. It sounds like a lovely story.
Dusty, I’m sure you will be captain of the cheer squad.
It is so sad. Dusty thanks you. XO
Cute photo! I might have to pass on the book, thanks for the warning.
Thank you. I would have passed too because I avoid sad.
The photo is absolutely adorable, and that sounds like a good book. Thanks for reviewing it! Mom is going to check it out. XOCK, angels Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta & Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy, Sawyer, Kizmet, Audrey & Raleigh
Thank you. ๐ XO
Sounds like an interesting book. Most animal lovers read those types of books for the feel-good vibes. Contrasting that other cats don’t always have wonderful lives is ok, but when it become distracting or depressing, I don’t see how that helps the book in any way. It’s like those awful ASPCA tv commercials – we know there are animals in need, we don’t necessarily need images of them in our living room.
Dusty is adorable as a cheer-kitty.
Exactly. I can’t watch those commercials. Dusty thanks you. XO
