How To Make a Catnip Mat

Happy Monday everyone! We are hopping withΒ  Create with Joy’s Inspire Me Monday and To Grandma’s House DIY Linky party both are great places to display your creativity. If you are looking for some crafts and recipes be sure to check these out. We are also joining Comedy Plus’ Awww..Mondays

First off, I will tell you how to make a catnip mat if you have a sewing machine ( you could also sew it by hand if you want).

You will need 1/2 yard of fabric, 1/4 yard of quilt batting, catnip and velcro.

Fold the 1/2 yd of fabric inside out.

then place the batting on top

Place the fabric/batting under the needle with the folded part at the top. Stitch down one long end, turn and stitch the short end, turn again and sew the other long end-stop when you have about 2 inches left to sew.

This is where I stopped. Then flip the fabric back through the 2 inch spot you left open so you can see the correct side of the fabric.

Add catnip ( the more, the better). Now glue the velcro into the 2 inch space. Now you can refill as needed.

If you can’t sew, you can buy this magic Heat “N Bond stuff at any craft store ( even at Walmart).

You will open the 1/2 yd. fabric with the good side on the bottom. Roll out a piece of this Bonding stuff on the bottom of 1/4 yd.

Place the batting on top of the piece

Place under piece of bonding stuff on top of the batting and fold the fabric on top. Then you iron the fabric which melts the bonding tape into place. Do this on all 3 sides, leaving 2 inches to add catnip and velcro.

The only trouble with this way is the edges won’t be smooth, but I doubt your kitty will mind. Let me know if you have any questions.

Emmy is tired from promoting the giveaway last week.

  1. Ellen,

A cool little DIY project that’s sure to make your kitties happy! I think you’ll need to make one for each of your cats or there might be a bit of tussle over who gets it. πŸ™‚

  2. Thank you for providing the instructions. Alas, it involves sewing something we just don’t do. Mommy can’t even sew on a button (mol). She is very envious of your talents that’s for sure. That is such a lovely mat.

  5. That looks wunnerful! TBT tells us his Mom taught him Basic Sewing when he was a teen (which has been quite useful) and he bought a decent sewing machine 20 years ago (which didnt werk out as well). He sure admires the skills at it that some others have learned, though.

  6. I’m glad that TW isn’t the only one who wouldn’t be able to make one of the these mats. Like Caren, in Home Ec she was supposed t make baby doll pj’s and when the term ended, she’d just cut the material. She’d rather be shooting hoops in the gym.

  7. Considering the likely age of most of us cat bloggers, I think it’s funny how many commenters said they can’t sew! I’ve made several blankets for the cats – fleece on one side, cotton flannel on the other, with satin binding. They don’t look professional, but they’re really nandy for little pet beds and taking the cats to the vet.

  8. So kind of you to share how to make the catnip mats! My home ec teacher through up her hands with trying to teach me to sew… the truth! Emmy took her job seriously as a promoter of the giveaway… good girl Emmy!

    • Sewing machines were harder to use in school. The one I have now is idiot proof which is why I can use it πŸ™‚ Emmy thanks you πŸ™‚ XO
