Penny’s Tips Volume 28

Hi everyone! I have a great tip today just in time for your holiday baking.

You can use pennies as pie weights. My mom just learned what that is….every time she makes a crust for the chocolate cream pie, it has bubbles on the bottom. I hope she tries this.

Β Sorry, I insist she give me my treats in advance.

You just put the pie crust in the bottom ( use your imagination, I didn’t have a crust for the photo).

Then you put parchment paper or aluminum foil over it and line it with pennies, then bake as usual. They will hold it down so it won’t bubble. I recommend washing the pennies first even though there is a layer protecting the crust.

  1. I’ve always used pie weights for my crusts and it really does the trick. I’m sure pennies do too – it’s all about the weight and not the thing that weighs it down!

    Hugs, Pam

  2. I’m no baker, but that’s clever. And I definitely would suggest washing the pennies. Money is so filthy. I’ve heard there are traces of cocaine on just about every bill, not to mention all the germs on coins. Ugh… Be well!

  3. I make gluten-free bread for myself every week and I prefer flatbread. I roll out my dough with a Teflon rolling pin, but it always stuck to the dough, even though I coated the dough and the rolling pin with buckwheat flour. I came up with a great alternative. Instead of coating everything with flour, I used an additional sheet of parchment paper, not only under the dough, but also between the dough and my rolling pin. No sticking, no cleanup of rolling pin. The parchment paper on the cookie sheet can’t be used again because it’s subjected to 425Β° on a metal baking sheet. The parchment paper between the dough and the rolling pin can be reused.

  4. That’s a great tip, Penny! You’re such a wise Tortie!

PeeS: We can’t see any other comments on your blog and haven’t been able to in awhile. Not sure what’s going on because we know you have other comments!

    1. Thank you πŸ™‚ I am not sure why you can’t see the other comments, but thanks for letting me know. XO

  5. Hmmmmm Well Penny, that’s an innerestin’ tip fur sure. Kittens only know where those pennies have been, we’ll stick with usin’ the fork to make holes in the crust. Big hugs

    Luv ya’
