Happy Friday everyone! Today is National Feral Cat Day. I am glad there is a special day to bring their plight to everyone’s attention.
In my part of town, there isn’t a feral population. Any stray that I have ever found, I kept. I did get them all vet checked and asked around to be sure I wasn’t stealing someone’s cat ( although, I would if needed). There are feral populations in town that dedicated people care for. Last year, when my friend’s father told me he wanted to trap and move cats that were coming into his yard from the feral colony next door- I told on him. I alerted a lady in town that knew the lady that cares for them so she could make sure he didn’t do this.
I also know a lady in Boston that has cared for ferals for over 20 years. There was an article about her in the Boston Globe last year: link to Boston Globe. Her group is called Boston’s Forgotten Felines and can be found on Facebook . I try to donate to them as well as Alley Cat Allies as often as I can afford to.
I found Polar Bear in town, near a place I was cat sitting. He showed up several days in a row for food and he was easy to catch so I don’t know if he counts as feral, but he definitely has a wild side.
